most of the criminals are opportunists, and theyre not going to get into a shootout with an armed home invader for a few bucks in pawnable loot when there are softer targets down the street.

as for 'urban BS myth', you can kiss it: the guy in question happens to be a very good friend's father who i highly respect and would have no reason to lie. at the time it happened she was 7 years old sleeping in her bedroom in a bunk with her younger sister. she woke up and there was a guy in the room who had climbed in the window (they had no a/c and had the windows open with just screens in summer). she screamed, her father jumped up, grabbed the shotgun by his bed and racked the slide -- before he could say a word the burglar ran out the front door and booted it down the street.
in this day and age everyone is familiar with the sound of a pump unless they grew up in a #%@$ing bubble. its also very loud at night in a quiet house (try it and see).

they now have massive holly bushes growing under every first floor window.

I'd say Norinco HP9 14" Shotgun... 12 gauge.

I have one and it rocks, cycles flawlessly, and thanks to its barrel length, is very easy to maneuver around corners found in a home.

Sorry no - I cobbled it together from suff I found on the net.

I was talking to a retired Police Officer recently who said their training involved scenarios where an attacker rushed at them from twenty feet and they were supposed to try to draw their gun and fire before the attacker reached them. The large majority could not draw their gun and fire before the attacker reached them. They were tought to backpeddle as fast as they could while drawing their weapon. That gave them enough time to draw and fire before the attacker was on top of them.

Chuck Taylor also developed a point shooting technique call the "speed rock" where he drew the pistol to belly height while bending his knees slightly and fired two round quickly. You hug your forearm along your torso and keep it parallel to the gound while bending you knees slightly to bring the muzzle up above the target's belly. This drill is meant to be done at no more than three yards and is VERY fast. Even though you don't technically aim, keeping your forearm hugged into your body and pointing the gun in the direction of the target works well. I have practiced it and almost without fail you can draw and get two rounds on a silhouette target using this technique (make sure you follow your range rules please). It saves time by not bringing the pistol up to arms length and trying to acquire the sights. Of course you have to be very carefull not to get the muzzle close to clothing or your belly but it works and works FAST. There's a good example of a variation of the technique used in the movie Collateral with Tom Cruise:rolleyes:....

Norinco HP9-1. Mine has been great! Very reliable and the short overall length makes it easy to maneuver in tight spots.

I think your points are valid Clobberasaurus.

I've often believed that a simple double in a coach gun is an excellent answer to home defense, especially in canada. Nothing wrong with it that's for sure.

Friend or not people talk #### all the time. If it went down as described, good on your buddy's Father for coming out the winner. You however indicated in your own post above that MOST criminals won't stick around for a fight, they are indeed opportunists. However, there are those who's sole purpose for the home invasion is to rape, rob, and murder the occupants. Maybe you like playing the odds, but they're always stacked against you.

Your assumption that everyone knows what a pump shotgun sounds like is a broad assumption at best. Most citizens in my experience couldn't identify a handgun from a long gun. Relying on the criminals audio memory regarding pump shotguns while inside your home is plain stupid. Why anyone would have a shotgun close at hand for home defense and not have a round chambered and a full magazine is probably a subscriber of the above belief regarding audio memory.

There are three members of my immediate family, who have all but one shot the guns in question, that would not know the sound of a slide from the fridge door at night. let alone have anu clue what the noise actually is.

I would think a burgler that does not have malicious physical intent would want to leave at the sound of anything telling him someone else was awake.
 
I don't have a home defense gun. I have a PC gun (Predator Control) and I'm in an area where there are no local shooting restrictions so I can keep a gun out. This gun has been used on four legged predators more than once and brought out in response to a two legged nuisance. It's a Remington 870.

Under $400 get a Remington Express HD or a Norinco. Then PRACTICE with it.

Because we are in Canada what matters is how quickly the gun can be loaded. Having loaded both types under pressure finer motor skills are required to load a double shotgun. With a pump it's easier to pull a shell from a side saddle or butt cuff, dump it into the ejection port, close the action and stuff a second shell in the magazine. At this point the pump has as many shots as the double with an option for more. Also in a dire situation you can just chamber and fire.

Short shucking isn't that much of an issue. I've owned a variety of pump guns and have never had it happen to me through thousands of rounds. I've also never seen a gun put completely out of commission due to short shucking. The way to prevent short shucking is to practice and get used to pumping the gun HARD. If you are that worried about short shucking or unwilling to practice then spend a little more and get a semi-automatic.

I own more doubles than anything else and would make one do if it was all that was at hand. But I think it's poor advice to recommend a double gun over a pump gun for PC duties.

If your price limit is $400 get a pump gun and practice with it.

I agree with Claybuster on this one and the 870 is my PC gun of choice.:agree:
 
i still think if you are in an area where you actually are seriously putting thought into a 'home defense gun' then you would be much better off first hardening your home against burglars, then getting a dog, and then worrying about a home defense gun.

dont get me wrong -- not saying dont get a shotgun. hell, this is the shotgun forum and we are all gun nuts.
IMO it is better to first take steps that will most likely prevent the situation entirely, and then worry about what to use in the event that they fail.
 
Mavis has got my back. These days she's got the factory butt stock on her becasue the Knoxx pasted my cheek something fierce. Cost $209.99 from Wholesale Sports and she hasn't failed me yet
