I know Hornady makes some ''SST style/Red tip'' 12g high velocity slug shots but they are for rifled only shot gun barrels.

I plan to hunt bear & deer with them also & am going to alternate/mix with SSG's. Would be primarily for Grizzly defence.

I've been out of shotguns for a while so I'll listen to any progressive comments someone is willing to make.

Brennke slugs seem to penetrate better from what people in the know have told me, but they are hard to find, your choice is limited with a smoothbore.

...after posting the same question awhile back I was told about challenger slugs sold by S.I.R.

Apparently these slugs are much harder than regular soft lead foster-type and are a step up in performance penetration wise.
Please note I have no first hand experience firing these slugs, just what I've heard on CGN.

...and if you do buy them please let me know how they perform,

I have used the Winchester Power Point slugs. Their advertised velocity is an impressive 1700 fps. I chronied some on the weekend right at 1650 fps out of my 18.5" Remington 870. They also will touch holes consistently at 65 yards. I don't care how hard the lead is as that velocity with one ounce of lead will bust something up.

Just google Remington premier ACCUTIP slugs. They have some kind of green plastic tip and just look menacing. I haven't found any for sale but I have heard some rumblings that the bonded makeup of these is devastating. They apparently retain 95% weight and can print a five shot 2" group at 100. Might be the new king of the castle.

From a smooth bore, Brenneke 2 3/4

There may be better slugs out there, but I haven't tested them. Avoid 3" slugs. Tehy go faster but recoil more, and you want to be able to put one into the bear and get back on target fast.

Avoid buckshot, it is only consistently reliable at very close range.

I hear a lot of Brenneke, but as an ex gun counter staff & frequent visitor of pretty much all guns stores Alberta has to offer, I have never seen them or heard about them except from this website.

Seen the new Remington ones in a hunting magazine, they look pretty deadly.

Before I get started here I just want to say that I mean absolutely no offense to anyone who's posted before me.

I just got back from the bush and I'm somewhat amused by this thread.

What does 100M accuracy have to do with bear defense?

If you're defending yourself I'd go so far as to say you'll be looking at ranges under 20M. You mightn't have time to line the sights up perfectly anyway. Firing rapidly from the hip is probably more likely and at those ranges it's going to be about putting the maximum amount of "reasonably accurate" firepower on target.

I believe that most encounters where you have to use your gun will be unexpected, panicked and ugly.

Finding the maximum load that you can fire accurately at realistic defense ranges from your shotgun while shooting by feel will determine what you should use.

That said; when I'm in the bush, I load Winchester Super-X 3" magnums.

There's a Canadian dealer. I bought 3 boxes from them this year. Google Brenneke, they have a pdf brochure and the name of the Canadian dealer and contact info is on it.
