I have 4 rifles chambered in .223 and the price of ammo is getting out of hand. Does anyone know when and if the price will come down below .50 cents a round. I'm thinking when the war in Afghanistan and Iraq is over.

Not likely!
The ammo boys are taking a page
from the oil companies play book.

Just like oil, they will knock it down a few cents
to quiet the masses. Then when the sheeple forget
about it for a while it will creep back up. and up and up!

I feel your pain

this is the only"benefit" to the 5&10 rule- you get more range time, but only if you have to load mags at the range- load enough of them at home, and you don't- on the other hand, the price of bullets hasn't gone up considerably- get a press

It is a factor of the war and of the fact that many former combloc countries and others are switching from X39 to 5.56.

It is a simple issue of supply and demand. Normally the US and NATO countries "set" the price of 5.56 at the high end. Other countries fall in line under them. However due to demand the NATO countries cannot supply, so the other players raise their price to meet the NATO price.

World price for new Grade 1 M855 ball is USD$0.27-0.32 per round, no matter who you buy from. 223/M193 is a bit cheaper. You do the math on shipping, permits etc to arrive at the CDN retail price.

I wouldn't count on ammo prices ever coming down. Even if all the assorted terrorists were to surrender today, it doesn't mean there'd be a flood of milsurp ammo coming into Canada.
Like bnichols says, reload. You will have to work up a load for each rifle though. No two rifles will shoot the same ammo the same way.
"...bit of an art with a semi-auto..." It's no big deal. You just have to full length resize every time and watch the case and OAL closely.

reload

about 4 years ago i bought 15K 55grn fmj bullets

I think i paid 46.00 per K

brass I got from guys here and guys at the range who dont reload

I reload the .223 brass 3x then scrap it

I have NOT bought any factory ammo in about 5 years

except 7.62x39 7.62x25 and 7.62x54r a s its/was cheaper to buy them then to reload

Only three times? pfff money must grow on trees for you lol. I been using the same 1000 R-P 223 brass for almost 8 years now, only time I toss it is when its cracked.

Not counting the cost of brass(I get it free at the range)
I pay : approx 5c per primer(CCI BR)45 dollars per 1000
10c powder (Benchmark, 28 dollars per pound, 280 loads per pound +/-
8 cents per bullet( 80 dollars per 1000 when I bought them)

So its costing me 23 cents per round, plus my time!
