HK P2000 Correctional Service of Canada's new duty pistol

Everyone,
Thank you for all your contributions thus far. I am learning a lot about a subject that, up until know, I knew little about. Please continue with your contributions.

rommelrommel,
If you don't mind, hypothetically, "If you were a purchasing agent for a gov't organization, which would be your platform of choice?" Top 2 picks...

rommelrommel,
Excellent first and second choices. I especially like the DAK trigger. From my limited knowledge of the 357 sig caliber, how does it rate against the 40, or for that case, the 10mm?

nairbg,
I have long thought about the Para. Do you use your 45 as a competition gun? If so, how do you get around the cost of reloading 45s?

rommelrommel,
I forgot to add: have you compared the trigger between the P229, P2022, and the DAK triggers? I recall that I preferred the DA pull of the 2022 over the 229 but didn't have the opportunity to try the DAK at that time.

No, I shoot a custom STI for IPSC, but I plan to shoot the CCW for IDPA if we ever get that going up here.

Cost of reloading? It's gotta be cheaper than golf balls!:shotgun:

lol... I do not know much about STI but I see that they have a good Ranger II in 9mm. What is your take on that? Again, not having touched one.

I've tried them all, DAK is more a nod to the perceived "extra safety" of a DA trigger.

357 SIG is based on my personal opinion that we're more and more likely to encounter targets wearing concealable armor.

Extra safety of a DA trigger? 2000, 229, WTF? The 1911 is the only real defense gun if you require a semi, cocked and locked, SA only....no plastic, no Europlastic 9mm, no shorty .40, If i have to defend myself with a pistol I'd want a .44mag. 41 mag. .44 special, .45 Colt, and if I couldn't have them..it's a .45 Auto, or nothing at all, I'll just stay out of the fight!! These other contraptions are for shooting games and posing for pictures, in tactical clothes!

The STI isn't what I'd use for CCW or for a service sidearm. First, it's SA and I'm not comfortable carrying in condition 1 and condition 2 or 3 is pretty useless. Second, the 3lb trigger is inappropriate for "adrenalin" situations. Third, it's adjustable sight could be problematic when drawing from consealment. Foruth, it's too pretty for a carry gun!

and finally... no handgun round smaller than .45 cal will do. If you carry a 9mm, your #### will fall off!

Hahahaaha .. this thread is good fun.

HK2000 is also the largest federal procurement for the US federal services too. They love the "europlastic" as you guys call"em. Im glad that corrections got a dependable quality made sidearm. The HK2000 also has adjustable backtraps (for women and small hands) and Im sure will outlast many of the guys carrying them.

As for the 45 debate for Canuck cops. Keep on wishing. 38SPL 9mm and 40S&W are the only calibres that are written in law here both federally and provincially .. so no 1911 side-slinging Canadian police Hahahahaaha

rommelrommel,
*nods* to your comments about 357 Sig and body armour, and I also like the DAK. Would you choose the DAK over the DA/SA version? I don't own a Sig but I know that at some point in the future, I will be adding one. Also, I heard that the P250 is coming out for commercial purchase in Canada. Have you heard anything about this? If so, I will wait and check out that platform before I commit to a purchase.

nairbg,

Everyone,
I am quite surprised that, up till now, no one has brought up the M&P 9/40 pistols as a platform of choice. And anyone know how Customs Canada is finding their Beretta PX4, now having been in service for more than a year?

Wow, ok! Not everyone is as manly as you there Hunchak. What are your thoughts on Techno music and skinny pants?

PX4 is interesting... very accurate for what it is, but the rotating barrel is cleaning intensive from what I hear from US owners. IMO I'd take the extra 6oz on my hip to get a full frame steel gun. That extra weight tames recoil. They also chose the 12lbs DAO trigger, which is a nasty POS IMO. The constant action would have been a better choice.

All the M&P is to me is a ###y-up'd Glock without the track record.

For a personal gun, I would take DA/SA. For a service gun, I think the DAK/constant action type triggers have some advantages, mainly for training people that are only going to shoot on qualification days. Truth be told, I'd probably carry a 1911 as well, but that's a pipe dream in Canada for LEO's at this point.

HK2000 with LEM trigger looks interesting.

unless it is used under special training. I think the .45 is in service by at least one agency.

WOW..your knowledge of the handgun requirments of a Federal agency is impressive...
It's to bad you have no idea what you are talking about.

You will be very hard pressed to find any law enforcement agency in Canada that would issue a single action only sidearm to it's officers.
The logistics on training them to a standard good enough to carry it cocked and locked and the liability of increasing the chances of an ND is something the Fed Gov't would never entertain.

Do some research on the psychological and physiological affects on a human being when they are in "fight or flight" mode. You might want to rethink your "cocked and locked hand cannon" philosophy.

As for the caliber of the gun..a .22 will kill you just as dead as a 500 S&W. It's all about shot placement..not bullet diameter.

As for "staying out of the fight". You might not have a choice in the matter.
