Being a student at the University of Toronto, I decided to join the Hart House Revolver Club. Upon browsing their website I noticed that only a one handed shooting grip is permitted for pistols at the range. I was just curious as to why this is the case?

Hello

Single handed only allowed? not so, dependes on the shoot your takeing part in such as ISSF bullseye competition. The shooter must shoot single handed for PPC and other events two handsfor better control. Shooting at the club for fun that's your choice single or two handed what makes you comfortable and confident. I myself shooting bullseye all the time and shoot single handed be it .22 or 44 mag. Since my son started shooting PPC he finds it hard to go back to shooting single handed when shooting an ISSF bullseye matches.

The club reopened but I think they had to move off campus. I'm going to the revolver open meeting on Tuesday, so I suppose I'll find out there.

They said something like "You need a valid medical reason in order to shoot with two hands."

???

One hand pistol shooting proves you have absolute, total control of the weapon.

If you can pull the trigger while holding the handgun on target with one hand, and hit the bulls eye, only then have you truly mastered the sport of pistol shooting:).

At my indoor range they have a picture of a guy that blew his thumb off shooting a .460 S&W because he was holding it below the chamber instead of both hands on the grip.

"...curious as to why this is the case?...rules like that!!..." Olympic style handgun shooting is all stand-on-yer-hind-legs and shoot with one hand. ISSF bullseye competition is Olympic style shooting. That's the type of shooting that is done at Hart House. It's nothing new nor does it have anything to do with Miller or anybody else.

HHRC was shut down over the summer. It's gone as far as I know.

I was on an ISU team member from 90-95.
Yes it does have some restrictive rules some from tradition and some for addional safety.

The single handed rule is really tradition since HHRC primarily supports the ISU shooting discipline.

Other rules to note...
1. 5 rd max in a semi auto.
2. 5 rd max in a revolver.
3. 10 round string before letting someone else take a string at on a stall.
4. No rapid fire.
5. some other rules that I forget now.

Anyhow, none of that matters now. I am just curous how you joined HHRC as it has been closed down permanently? Also, shMillers city gun ban on clubs on top of that...

The club no longer operates out of Hart House on campus property, but it's still around. From the website: "Both clubs now operate off campus, with the Rifle Club using the Royal York range in the west end of the city and the Revolver Club using the Toronto Revolver Club range in the east end of the city."

"...the Royal York range..." That's a ISSF handgun range, the last time I was there. In an old police station just north the The Queensway.

Here's the .460 thumb removal technique mentioned earlier in the thread:

BTW z0k, has the open house for the rifle club happened yet? Been a bit deluged with classes to get a chance to check it out for myself. Having to go out of Toronto to shoot these events kinda sucks, but with Miller and liberal school administrators, whatcha gonna do?

Well, I shoot a fair bit better with one hand than I do with two. It's just a comfort thing with me. I feel like I'm working too hard when I'm using a 2 handed grip. I'm not pulling my own chain when I say this but...my hands and arms are strong enough to hold a gun straight out without any real effort so there's no trembling other than my normal "you've had too much coffee for the past 30 years" shake :D. I can hit 6 inch gongs at 100 yards about 50% of the time and the ones that miss are pretty close. I sure wouldn't call myself an expert though. To each his own I guess.

The open house meeting for the rifle club is on Monday at 6pm. Unfortunately for me I have a lecture during those hours. I think they allow you to drop in to the rifle safety courses without having to register at the opening meeting though.

I think Sunray is right. The club is obviously set up for target shooting only, and their rules make that clear.
