Hand grenade training advice

Throw the grenade not the pin ;)....as stupid as it sounds it does happen occasionally.
It is pretty nerve racking the first time, but its an amazing rush... for me at least. As for throwing, don't lob it, throw it like a baseball as far as you can.

We've always been told simply to yell "Grenade!" I had one old Sgt. who told us he would shove the pins up our a$$ if we yelled "Frag out." I always thought the idea was to pull the grenade away from the pin as it ensure the pin stayed straight if it need to be put back in place. Crap, why can't I remember this? I just did my IBTS.

are old WWII pineapple grenades less powerful than modern grenades?
Weapons tend to improve with time. So I would say yes. I remember throwing those little golf ball sized grenades when I was in the army in the mid 90's. What model was that? I have forgotten? But they made the same blast as the larger M67. You were able to carry more but I never was issued any, not even in ex-yugo.

Years ago we always went through the grenade throwing drill with a practice grenade before going on the range to throw the real thing. Not too exciting to do really, you throw it, watch where it lands, then duck behind the wall until it goes off.

V-40 iirc, I never got to throw one of those although one of our NCO's told us about them. I only got to fire the C-13/M-67.

V-40 (?) - I thought that they were destroyed c.1989 because too many were found to be defective?

I have never heard "Frag out!", just simply "Grenade!"

The throwing drills have already been discussed, and the Colombian drills should be similar if not the same.

Just relax and don't worry too much about distance and accuracy on the first throw - just concentrate on the drills.

Have fun!

well just remember the U.S has a 2 KIA per 1000 acceptable losses for training (if i remeber correctly)

they also issue at least 6 /rig with the extras going a musette bag- whatever idiot decided it was a good idea to put grenade pouches on the sides of an ammo pouch?- i can see having a couple of couple of smokes or a frag and a smoke on the rings, but down on the pouches? incidentally, i've been written on not having "enough"grenades- supposed to be 4 in the pouches , 2 on your rings- but only during basic, and eq inspection- a lot of guys would get inert training grenades, paint them the appropirate color, and put those in the ammo pouch pockets= and "GRENADE" was all i ever heard as well- frag out was for the blooper

Quote from Glen Valour:

Grip grenade in your THROWING hand with the Safety Lever in your palm.
With the grenade held close to your body, pull the ring attached to the safety pin away from the grenade. Do NOT pull the grenade away from the pin.

You take the safety clip off, and put your middle finger through the safety pin and hold it in your chest then pull the grenade away from your chest so that your arm is straight and back and then toss it in a high arc, that's the standard drill, but whatever you do, pull the grenade away from the pin and throw.

Disclaimer - This is not a definitive guide to the use of and handling of grenades and other devices.

Inspect the grenade for damage.
Remove (assuming M-67) the Safety Clip.
Straighten the safety pin.
Grip grenade in your THROWING hand with the Safety Lever in your palm.
With the grenade held close to your body, pull the ring attached to the safety pin away from the grenade. Do NOT pull the grenade away from the pin.
When it is safe to do so (whether deemed so by you and/or instructor) throw the grenade at your target. Watch where it lands.
Duck.
Kaboom. (note - not all grenades go boom. If grenade does not go boom let someone who has more luck deal with the problem.)
Smile :)

My ol' Sgt taught us to pull the grenade away from the pin and in the same action, wind to throw. So take a coke can, grip the tab and pull the can downward, not the tab upward, and this is done at at hip level. Saves time instead of pulling the pin out then winding for the throw.
