My buddy's dog just calved a few puppies. I might get one. The ##### is a black lab and the #### and balls was a chocolate lab so he ended up with 4 blacks and 2 chocolate in the litter.

So my question is this. What should I get, black/chocolate male/ female ect.
I would use it as a pet, riding in the truck every day at work, hunting, and guard/protective of my wife when she is in and out of the house...type dog.
And it would have to live in the house in the winter.

Basically a little of everything, if it was a perfect world.

x2 female. If it is just going to be a pet have it spayed and save yourself a lot of headaches. The coat is more of just a personal choice. Just be prepared for a lot of shedding. I have a 8 yr. old female chocolate and could not be happier, smart as can be, great with people/kids and other dogs.

chocolate male. Chocolate is nicer, and males are more protective in house when your not around.
Oh and he wont kill your grass

I have a male that serves exactly the purposes you described. Neutered him right at 6 months and he is now a VERY well mannered 2 year old. Strangers at the door or a noise in the night and he lets you know about it. As far as color goes its personal preference. I sometimes think chocolate are a little more skittish but there's probably no truth to that.

Female choc or black.

Always prefer female dogs they are generally better mannered and can be really protective of wife and any kids if you have them.

Get both. Two dogs are happier than just one.

Cattle calve, dogs whelp.

Honestly such a crude lack of manners makes hope you don't choose a puppy. I suppose you think the vulgarity is macho but I find it totally out of context. What kind of person speaks so nauseatingly about a pet?

I would go with either, if you plan on having it in the truck at work I know that my friends male lab is alot more relaxed then his female. both are good and will let you know if someones there. At the end of the day this is one question that you have to make on your own. Either would be good.

So what you guys are saying is there is no real difference between the two colours?

Maybe a female just because they are smaller.

My friends wife is going to "test" them to categorize them into A, B, and C personalities. Any one heard of this, and does it really mean anything? She said I would probably be best with a "B" for an all-rounder.

Colour don't matter a bit in the field or for water work.

A female is just fine for what you've described, and a good hunting companion and house guard.

A male would be more aggressive in the field and guarding around the house, and a bit more rambunctious in the duck blind.

Dogs are molded to the owners style of life.
If well disciplined, it shows in the dog. If not disciplined, it also shows in the owner.

Is the dog a good example of the owner? you betcha!!...:)

We've had four black labs. Three females and a recently acquired male.

For your purposes I don't think colour matters. ### has pluses and minuses on both sides and it depends whether you intend to neuter. An intact male can be hard to manage and a ##### when in heat creates a range of different issues including the prospect of an unwelcome litter.

If you can spend some time with the puppies. When I selected our new pup earlier this year I had three to choose from, a female and two males. I watched them interact over a few days. I chose one of the males because he showed the personality I thought would fit best in our home. So far so good except that I can't leave a shoe or boot on the floor without him running off with it. ;)

Have had both male and female labs and the spayed female is much easier to handle and train than the male was. The male was a physically stronger dog and hunted harder, but the female is so easy to interact with without having to raise your blood pressure to get through to her.
I would recommend the female, color is your choice.
