Help me work up a Scout Rifle with an M14

I have a Norc M14 that shoots like a dream bone stock. I've been hemming and hawing about what to spend my money on to make it better!

I've sort of decided to try out setting up a Scout rifle out of it.

I figure I need an Ultimak Hand Rail Scope Base. I hear good things about these. I also believe I can get one shipped for about $220-$240 from Brownelles.

I figure I need a USGI synth stock and a rubberized butt pad. Both of these I can buy from Fab Sports. The stock for $200 shipped, and the rubberized but pad $30 shipped.

I have ABSOLUTLY no idea what kind of scope I need. I have heard over and over again about the 'leopeau scout scope' but I am pretty sure it will be out of myprice range. I'm thinking more along the lines of Bushnelle ... 2x or 3x .. but I was hoping some of you could give me some specific models to look at. I do know they need some heafty eye relief as they will be mounted so far forward.

I have thought about scope rings, and think that I would like to mount the scope using some sort of Quick Disconnect rings that I can remove the scope with .. that way I have 'back up irons' that I can still use. Any thoughts on ones that work well?

Eventually I will probably have to cut and crown the barrel down to 18 3/4" to keep the rifle shorter and more balanced with less weight. I want to do this last just in case i'm not a fan of the scout setup.

Anything else I missed?

One last thing, in what order would be the best way to buy everything? I want to buy the Ultimax, rings and scope first, but I am worried that USGI stocks are starting to become increasingly difficult to find.

for the scope, long eye relief isnt easy to find, i have a scout setup N14 and i ended up going with a cheaper New Century scope .. its not going to last long, but as i say it was cheap because same with you, leuopold is out of my range,
so failing that, you may need to look at red dots
 
At the moment I am also trying to build an M14 and you mentioned getting a synthetic USGI stock from Fab Sports. I went to their site and they were sold out of stocks. Have you been able to find another source for stocks, could you help me out?

I saw that as well. I got a pm from the guy on here 2 day's ago saying he's got 'em in stock .. so maybe give them a call and see what they say!
 
I gotta ask why you want to make a "scout rifle" out of an m14? One of the main criteria for a scout rifle is that it is light and trust me with the Ultimak, optic and stock its not exactly light. I have all that with a cut and crowned bbl and its not a backpacking/quick target aquisition rifle. The rifle is great don't get me wrong but I certainly wouldn't call it a scout rifle by any means.

I have a n14 with the Ultimak rail, bushy 2-6 LER scope and a USGI stock and it works good but I won't be dragging it through the bush for a long day's hunt although in treestand/ambush style hunting it seems to work great.

So far, I'm loving this rifle off the bench. It will be used in the field for the first time in a few weeks for moose, then later for deer. To manage the weight, I've attached a BFG Vickers Combat Application Sling available from One Shot Tactical. This allows me to carry it muzzle straight down in front of me while moving through bush and then bring it up very quickly to my shoulder when needed. We'll see how well it works in the field!

Definitely get a USGI stock or after market ASAP. Good luck.
 
An M14 scout CAN be more than a minus 50 meter rifle. With an IER, you can shoot fast and accurately at 500 meters. I shoot with a Burris scout and it has served me well. I just wish it was a variable to 6X, have a mildot reticle, and target knobs with 1/4 minutes.

I have no complaints dragging my uncut 22" barrel through the bush with a 50 pound pack.

I have some synthetic USGI stocks available, and one painting camo too.

use hand loads able on a good day to get 1 inch groups from the bench.

I'm glad to see happy UltiMAK users here, I have this M8/Micro T-1 combo ready to go on a SOCOM 16 SEI.

The Micro sits real low on the rail, I should not require the addition of a cheek rest.
Co witnessing of the original iron sights is a possibility...

The ultimak is the ultimate - all the barrel clamps stiffen the barrel so its like shooting a heavy match barrel - a great big heat sink also. Was so accurate I put a Bushnell elite 2 - 6 power pistol scope on it instead of my aimpoint micro. My second most consistently accurate norc.
 
...I'll say it. The M-14's a poor choice for a scout rifle, a true scout rifle, and not the kind that gets marketed necessarily, would be about 6.5lbs optics and mounts in. A sporter weight bolt action of high quality will out shoot the M14s easily, jam less, be more durable and last longer, plus it is available in a wide range of more effective or appropriate calibers. Just my small change. What's being discussed here is more of a CQB .308, which I find an oxymoron.

Semi auto more than makes up for the couple of extra pounds. A true scout is supposed to be fast - the reason for the bindon concept sighting. I agree that a bolt gun will outshoot a stock m14 - but a tuned m14 shoots one inch at a hundred - all mine do -- 2 of mine will get half inch - :)
