I know a lot of CGN members hunt with milsurps and I'd like to add a deer rifle and milsurp to my inventory at the same time. Currently I can only think of a few rifles that I can get for less than $300 taxes + shipping in, thats the budget I've set for myself as I'll only use it a few times a year and IPSC is something I've invested quite heavily into.

Mosin Nagant M91/30
Mosin Nagant M44
Mosin Nagant M38
Swiss K31
Swedish M96
AG42B

As long as the caliber is sufficient enough to take down a deer the cost isn't prohibitive as I'll be able to reload for it.

Thanks for any input guys!

Out of your choices, swiss K31 hands down. Super slick swiss craftmanship, cool strait pull action and better than average accuracy. Combine that with a round pretty much equal to the 3006 and a 6 round mag and you have a winner.

M96 is the way I'd go. High quality, very accurate, light recoil and easy to find good ammo. The 6.5x55 is a proven killer on deer and moose.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, seems like the K31 and M96 are top choices in my price range. As for the Lee Enfield I don't think I'm going to tempt myself, a nice full wood is too much $$$. Original military configuration is one of my key criteria, which I forgot to mention.

Buy a 6.5x55 sporter from Trade-ex, bolt altered drilled for weaver bases go hunting......................Harold

Mosins

Our local shop just got in a bunch of Mosins, both short and long rifle versions. Most are 1940's vintage & look like new. Shorties are $170; longies are $160....

Cheap! The prices of Nagants right now are tempting but for slightly less then $300 I can have a K31, which I'm reading about now and it boasts some ridiculous accuracy for a rifle of that vintage.

I know that I can find Prvi 7.62x54R ammo fairly cheap in town, about 75 cents per boom for ammo I can reload and hunt with. I believe they have Prvi 7.5x55 Swiss as well for perhaps 50 cents a round more then 7.62x54R, which I can also hunt with. At $25 or more a box I wouldn't want to be doing much shooting with it haha, but for a deer hunting rifle I think a box of ammo per year is more then enough.

Sounds like you've got more of an itch for the K31, and that's probably the most important thing as all the options you listed plus the 303 are perfectly capable.

You certainly wouldn't do yourself a disservice if you did a little bit of reading on the Swede to see if that grows on you a bit.

I liked my 6.5x55 swede so much I picked up a couple of Husky 9.3x57 's from tradex-but you've gotta reload-or buy expensive Norma ammunition.Same excellent craftmanship but more thump[286 gr vs 139gr]heck of a deal for under $300.....in fact with a pair of them-you'd be pretty well covered for anything in North America

The K31 certainly provides a lot of bullets options for me as a reloader. The rifle is also exceptionally good looking and the straight-pull action is really intriguing. There are a lot of them around for an absurdly low price considering the quality of these rifles. The one thing that concerns me is the action type.

Are there safety concerns above and beyond that of a bolt-action design which I should be considering and looking out for while I'm shopping?

Mosin's safety sucks big time. It's not a worthy deer rifle just for that.

You can't beat the Swedish for acuracy and shootablity.

Never tried the Swiss, but I imagine ammo isn't an easy find either for that gun?

An Enfield is great if the barrel isn't corroded to he**. All that corrosive ammo has left many Enfield's hopelessly innaccurate.

Another pick for the swede, Im also biased because I own one but Ive also owned Lee Enfields and Mosin's . I would use a Mosin as a club for Partridge and Northern Pike. Lee Enfield gets second place.

Check with Anthony @ Tradeex.

The Swede seems to be getting a lot of votes! It's unfortunate that I can't fire either of them before purchasing it but I'll be handling both of them tomorrow at a local shop, my chance to see if the Swiss K31 action is as slick as they say ;)

the swedes are finely finished, walnut stocks and you can get them in 6.5x55,8x57,9.3x57,9.3x62-in my opinion great value.Tradex is good to deal with

Have a Mosin in the cabinet, would never get another. The safety is terrible, and has feeding issues...... almost any other rifle is a better choice... Don't like to have to adjust the sights with a brass punch....
