Looking for a new Bolt to shoot at range (100-200 yard) MIGHT, go deer hunting with friends next season, or Coyote.

Looking to keep it under a nice budget since I dont know if I will enjoy using Bolt action too much or not.

Can anyone recommend a caliber? 30-06, 308, etcetc I want caliber which is CHEAP to practice on and use to plink at the range but still be able to bag a deer IF i am lucky.

Thank you

Jesus.
No 710/770's.
Find a nice, used bolt action .308 Remchesikka on the EE.
Shoot paper, kill deer later - if you're so inclined.

Oh God, don't even consider the rem 770/710. There are a few good threads on here that soundly bash the gun and will tell you all you need to know about what is wrong with it. Just do a search. You can have a much better gun for less money.

call Anthony at tradex and get yourself a good 6.5x55 swede. It would be ideal for coyotes as well as deer-and I've taken a moose and bear with it too.An all round-excellent caliber-accurate, low recoil rifle

neither of those rifles are decent

pick up a Stevens 200 or Marlin XL7, top it with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 and go hunting for $700 out the door

The Stevens 200 in 223 is a fine rifle, cheap to feed and if the NATO forces use 223 for hunting 250 pound humans, you can use it to kill deer as well.

6.5X55 is a great caliber - awesome in fact, but not cheap to feed .The Stevens is a great platform on which to build as funds and interest allows. Getting scope mounts, stocks and mags for a milsurp Swede would be a royal pain. Read Mysticplayer's accounts of making a long range precision out of the Stevens components.

thanks for all the info. i think all go with the stevens 200.with the cabela's tactical multi turret scopes 6-18-40 duplex.
scope 179.99
gun.299.99
cheap and fun.
thanks.

What ever you do, don't buy that Remington.
I'd vote for a Savage if your after a package gun or a Stevens.
I'd stick to a .308, reasonable to feed and with the right bullet ( if you put it in the right place) will drop 99% of the critters in NA (IMO) .
YMMV

OK Thanks for the info, I just purchased my new Mossberg 100 ATR night train 308.

I asked a lot of people, Steven 200 was nice, but the stock was very weak compared to the Mossy, also, if you add a 4-16X 50 scope and a Bipod and a Sling as well, its alot more money.

also, the Mossy just feels more comfortable for me (big boy..lol) perhaps its just the stock that makes the final call.

Thank you for the help everyone, once i learn to shoot the bolt rifle properly and get serious, a Rem 700 or the new Savage with Accutrigger is in order.

Cheers!

Congrats on the new gun, dont forget a range report. I had asked about the Mossbergs and did not get a lot of responses so I'd be interested in your views.
