Hi Gents. I am in the market for a new scope which is going on a 300wsm. I have decided to go with leupold, but I am unsure about the model. I like the idea of a 50mm objective, but to meet my budget, a vx-1 is all I can spring for, which costs about the same as a vx-2 in a 40mm. I am wondering if anyone has first hand knowledge about which model will perform best in low light conditions, and which would be best all around. Thanks guys.

If you want the best low light performance for the dollar,I would not go with leupold at all. They are dependable scopes, but they don't generally offer the best low light performance as other scopes costing the same or less.

The Bushnell 6500's are being advertised as being the brightest scope available. I have a 2.5-16x50 on my .243 and I am very pleased with its light transmission.

Do you know what the eye relief is, as I'm also looking to upgrade my 3006 rifles scope.

4 or 5 inches if I recall. I have one too and would not consider owning anything else.
One of the biggest turn offs I have seen for Leoplod yet is the fact that the repair center has it's own sticky on this forum.
I do not own, nor have I looked through a 3200 or 4200 but I constantly hear good things about them.

Bushnell 6500's are big and heavy. The 4200 2.5x10 amd 3200 3x9 have 3.3" of eye relief. Run of the mill Leupold VX1 and VX11's 3x9 have 3.7" of eye relief. A more forgiving .4" can be pretty significant if you hastly taking aim at a fleeting buck and your cheek doesn't come up to the stock quite right.

I know people who don't like a 50mm scope on a hunting rifle; claiming they are too big, too bulky and make the rifle top heavy. To each his own I guess.....but something to think about.

It's all relative, you get what you pay for, Bias opinions on scopes based on advertisements are ridiculous, I'll make it easy, cheap scopes are not good & good scopes are not cheap, if you believe any different you will play the same game many others before you have, start off with the cheap stuff trying to save a few bucks and never happy until they get what they really really wanted, and do you know why everyone wants expensive glass, because it's worthy of truly being called a quality optic, so as you can tell I never mentioned any brand names, just the prices & how they are relative!!!

Best Leuppy for the money

I would think that for the " money" and you insist on having a Leupold that the rifleman series is the best buy.
That said the Bushnell pricing on their most popular scope, the 3200 3 - 9 x40 is like $214.00, an absolute bargain in my books, Leupold rings and bases for another $69.00, and your good to go for almost any rifle. FS

Now were talking. Excellent scope for a very reasonable price. If I can afford it here with the horrific rand/dollar exchange rate, you should be able to equip all your hunting rifles with a VX3.

The South African PHs I've met all had a universal admiration for Leupolds. I'm thinking about bringing my tips in VX111 boxes, to promote international happiness.
