Ok, I've decided to make a thread about the question asked about 3 times per week on this board...

I'm missing some information... let me know if you know anything about the question marks or of missing/wrong information. Let’s try and keep this thing short, simple and fairly neutral.

NON RESTRICTED BLACK RIFLES

Armalite AR-180B
AR180B%20large.jpg

Cost: $1300+
Caliber: .223
Availability: Discontinued
Criticism: Expensive aftermarket parts

Berretta CX4 Storm
berCx4Storm.jpg

Cost: $800-1000 + $350-400 for rebarreling
Caliber: 9mm Luger
Availability: Standard as a restricted firearm, but can be rebarreled to non-restricted classification. Should be pretty easy to find a new or used one. A dealer or gunsmith would have to do the rebarreling, so finding someone reliable and with the parts may be a challenge, but it has been done before.
Criticism: Permanent iron sights.

HK SL8
HKSL8.jpg

Cost: $2000
Caliber: .223
Availability: They seem to be widely available.
Criticism: There was some reports of receiver cracking, which some believe could be caused by dry firing. This is not an ongoing issue, and it is widely believed to have been corrected by HK.

IWI Tavor
tavor_02.jpg

Cost: $3000
Caliber: .223
Availability: One shipment made. A new shipment is rumoured. ETA unknown.
Criticism: Cost and mandatory optics. Most would prefer a rail to the less than stellar Mepro sight.

Robinson Arms M96
robarm_m96-1.jpg

Cost: $2400+
Caliber: .223
Availability: Pretty hard to find in Canada. Out of production.
Criticism:????

Robinson Arms XCR
robarm_xcr-1.jpg

Cost: $2000
Caliber: .223
Availability: Few have made it into Canada so far, and they are difficult to find new right now. A used one might pop up once in a while.
Criticism: There was some reports of small reliability issues.

Swiss Arms: Black Special, Black Special Target, Classic Green, Blue Star, etc.
swiss02.gif

Cost: $2800-3000
Caliber: .223
Availability: The Swiss Arms rifles are delivered to the supplier by non scheduled and random shipments. Getting the one you want may be difficult depending on the model and when the last shipment was. Used ones are easy to find.
Criticism: Cost

REDISH-BLACK NON-RESTRICTED RIFLES
brown?

CZ 858
cz858.jpg

Cost: $650
Caliber: 7.62X39
Availability: Widely available and often viewed as a great entry black rifle
Criticism: Aesthetics

Type 97
type95-1.jpg

Cost: $850
Caliber: .223
Availability: ??????
Criticism: Made in China. Aesthetics.

Mini-14
300px-Ruger_Mini-14.jpg

Cost: $700-1150
Caliber: .223
Availability: Widely availible
Criticism: Water guns are more accurate. The target model is ok.

M305 AKA Norinco M-14
images

Cost: $450 and up
Caliber: .308
Availability: Discontinued. The M305's were assembled from spare parts. The parts were all used up. Many in country however, so a used one should be easy to find.
Criticism: Parts can be out of spec. Banana wood stock does not hold out too well for repeat firing.

UNOBTAINIUM

G36 (semi only)
hk_g36e.jpg

Cost: $8000-10,000
Caliber: .223
Availability: Good luck
Comments: Officially HK does not sell military/law eenforecement firearms to civilians. Some of those firearms are manufactured in semi-auto only configuration and somehow made it into civilian hands in Canada. Perfectly legal, just HK would not be happy.

Walther WA2000
wa2000-1.jpg

Cost: USA open market: $80,000. $30,000 if you know where to look in Europe.
Caliber: .308, 7.5x55, 300 Win Mag
Availability: Discontinued in 1988
Comments: Only 176 were ever made.

Swiss Arms Sniper
sg550.jpg

Cost: $7500 when they were available...
Caliber: .223
Availability: rarer than hen's teeth
Comments: 7 were imported into Canada (sans the parker hale bi-pod pictured). Out of production. Owners seem to be holding onto them.

SIG 540/542
sig_sg540_1.jpg

Cost: ????
Caliber: .223, .308
Availability: Still in production by FAMAE, but civilian sales are restricted. Very rare in Canada
Comments: High production costs and low sales lead to a re-design, known as the SG 550.

Holloway Arms HAC-7
standar_carbine_comparison.jpg

Cost: ????
Caliber: .308
Availability: 350 ever produced.
Comments: Incredibly rare in Canada, but can be had for $2500+ in the US. Not sure if they they are approved for export.

Valmet M78
valmet-m78-400_htl0.jpg

Cost: $4000+
Caliber: 7.62x39, .223, .308
Availability: Findable, but very rare.
Comments: Very sought after

Good thread. Non-Restricted is a good option in Canada.
Ive had a HK SL8 G36 conversion but it was BIG and expensive for a 223 rifle. The G36 options such as Hensoldt optics and G36 type stock are great but arent cheap.

Im currently running a Sig Swiss Arms Green Classic and as a stock rifle its GREAT. Maybe a good platform for an ACOG

I think that the Armalite AR180B with the right gear would be an OK option for the price (MI rail and optics).

Just an idea, information on what calibers each rifle is offered in would be helpful.

Oh and thanks for doing all that work :)

+1 for sticky. Would be nice to show calibres and update the availability frequently!!

ps-hopefully we will see the noinco M4 clone up there soon enough.

I'm personally not too keen on it being a sticky.

But...

The Robarm M96 used to be sold for $2400. Being as they don't appear to be in production anymore, the price will be a bit wonky.

There's no way you're going to see any M4 clones up here. The AR15 is RESTRICTED by name.

If you're going to put up the SL8, you should comment that a full length G36 is also non-restricted. Cost: 1 kajillion dollars!

Although it may not be considered a black rifle I think the Norinco M-14 deserves a spot on this list. Just throw on a TROY, SAGE, or JAE stock and you got a mean looking, .308 caliber, non-restricted semi auto..... and no one can deny the awesomeness of that.

How about the Mini-14... kinda borderline BUT they do turn into a black rifle. Heck there are more of these in homes than any of the other rifles on that page....

With work done.....

I think the definition of "black rifle" has become a little vague. I mean, I have an Ar15 clone, but my 3 sks are very "black" and tactical after all the add-ons so do they apply?
P1010119.jpg

If they do, than the list is quite a bit bigger, mini14, mini30, 10/22, cz long barrel...etc...

I always thought the m16/ar15/c7 family were "black rifles".

I always thought the m16/ar15/c7 family were "black rifles".

I would say any somewhat modern rifle (mainly semi autos) that did not come with wood furniture had/have been used by many militarys around the world would be a black rifle.

Please update your post to include M14s A.K.A. M305. Non-restricted and unlike most other black guns is very powerful and accurate. Rifle 450$ give or take, stocks JAE, Troy or SAGE with accessories about 1000$ + another 100$-1500$ for glass.
