I am just wondering if anybody knows how many AR rifles have been manufactured over the years. I know the Winchester 94 had a manufacturing run of what 9 million? Has the AR surpassed this (not counting the military ones) ?

Considering that even Remington has gotten into the game with an AR model, I am just wondering if the AR is now the most popular sporting rifle in america???

yes , i think its is.There are alot of companys making ar15's in the USA.If you go to ar15.com i am sure you will be able to confirm this.

I think every Canadian should have a working knowledge of the AR platform and be able to effectively engage targets up to 300m as a minimum. Every law abiding adult male and female should have one. At least every gun nut should own one......or two........maybe one in .308 as well.......

Some of those guys on ARF have like 20 or more AR 15's alone, not to mention other stuff. I am thinking much like the 1911, it is very popular for similar reasons, but unlike the 1911, glock (or some equivalent) isn't cutting into its market share.

Sorry, although I am an extremely avid shooter (+/- 4000 rounds per year) Firearms are used for target sports and for hunting in my household. Pehaps I am reading too much into what you consider a "target" since the 5.56 NATO is not a hunting round?

I spent 12 years in the CF; I have a better than just "working" knowledge of the AR platform, but I am more than happy to leave soldiering and law enforcement to professionals under the command of professionals.

I think you did read too much into what he meant by targets. But I agree with him. If we took a stance like the Swiss have done with firearms ownership I think we would be better respected by our enemies and possible invaders in the future. When was the last time the Swiss were invaded despite being such a small country with a relatively small population? Was it because nobody would dare invade a country where the civilian population was just as equiped as the military? Or was it because of the terrain?

Does that mean you kill 4000 animals a year? Surely some of those rounds are fired at paper targets, are they not?

I don't know why you would be happy to willingly subject yourself to government dependency. If there were a war, or civil unrest, or zombies or whatever might suit itself to defensive rifle use, would you want to be whimpering for the government to come save you, or be capable of protecting yourself?

Actually by sheer volume there are more imported SKS's than ARs in America.
Added up there are more SKSs than winchester 94s.
Interesting trivia.

The training, if also similar to the Swiss, may also improve the character for a number of youth and provide additional of future benefits.

The crime rate in Switzerland, or lack of it, is something to envy.

"ARs for all" - where do I vote?

Anyone with an AR in Canada would be crazy to sell it now. I am holding on to mine at all costs. I am not going to get caught in between AR's when/if a ban comes down from the next Liberal gov't. I will most likely buy a CX4 in the next year as well.
Hang on to them and if you don't have one... buy one:)

Sadly, the AR probably is one of, if not THE most popular rifle in North America.

Of course, lots of people like Ford, and Britney Spears, too. Popularity does not equate with quality...

And you would recommend a FAL to take its place I suppose...... Heck, why not bring back Garands, I mean at least they are reliable and PROVEN in the desert, not like the JAMOMATIC AR.

You are nutts,...

No, don't misunderstand me.... If we are keeping our discussion to the poodle rifles (Not a battle rifle, like my much beloved FN, which WILL kill the bad guy hiding behind the tree, and not need air support to bomb him away....), then I am quite happy with the Swiss products. Let's not get into apples vs. oranges: I learned to protect Canada with an FN, so I will always hold that weapon system near and dear... But we were asked about the AR's popularity:

I was issued a C7 once upon a time, and I have shot two civilian AR15's: I don't like them: They are finicky, fragile, and funny looking, and that return spring in the butt drives me crazy (and for those that know me in person, I don't need to be driven: I can walk myself, thanks!).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Celine Dion is probably Canada's most popular export, too, and well... The original question was whether or not the AR is the most popular, and I agreed it probably was.

Y'all have a super duper day, now!

:)

Once upon a time I was an FN fan too and still am really....Even if the the Prohib status was removed,..I'd still choose the AR..following that,..an AK variant of some sort...
