I just had to share with you guys. This is a 900lb moose. Ran out right on the bush road in front of us on the way home. 20 mins after he was down, at least 10 wolves started howling all at the same time 500 yards in the bush from the direction he came out. He was on the run. Two rounds from the .44 Trails End. 295gr air dropped ww LBT with a .300" meplat. 2400 powder. 1500 fps. Almost complete penetration. Next year it will be water dropped for complete penetration. Beautiful thing is it was with my dad. It may be his last year hunting. Been my best hunting partner since before I could walk.

I got a picture of a red X....
And a 44mag is an effective short range rifle... you the one who called it pussy not me
Congrats on the Moose... keep hunting with your dad 8)

A .44mag in a rifle is abotuthe same energy etc as a 30-30. While I would pick the 45 colt fi I was to get a lever gun in a pistol cartridge, the 44 mag seems to work just fine!!

:D

Great job, that's a nice looking Moose! :D

I too will be hunting with a .44 Mag rifle this year - my Ruger Deerstalker for whitetails. I'll be interested to see how it "lays them out".

I prefer the .45 Colt (with 300 grains of pain reliever), but cheapsk8's load sounds pretty darn close (and it obviously works !) :p

Any way you slice it, it's a job well done !

Ya I'd prefer a 45 colt too Gate for cool factor alone if nothing else.

But I do now have a hog's leg and rifle in 44 as that's how it all worked out

Don't anyone kid yourself...

Kool factor is IMPORTANT!!

Thanks anyway John.

BTW, the load I used was 200-250 fps below max. I wanted a quiet load that wouldn't make my ears ring for a week. That and I like 2400 better than H-110 for several reasons.

The reason I went .44 Mag over .45 was I already had a revolver in that chambering. I went with a revolver in .44 as I live in a fairly gunsmith isolated area and didn't feel like having issues with the tight throat issue so many .45 are plaqued with.

Also the .45 are becoming so vougue they are almost not as cool any more! :lol

Best all, cheapsk8

I think the .44 is a pussy in a rifle!!! It is damn gentle on your shoulder to shoot and works well if you're close enough. The only moose I've ever seen drop right away fell to a 44 shot to the neck at maybe 10 or 15 yards.

i went the other way-got the pistol ( ruger redhawk later) made a nice deal on a 94 win trapper BECAUSE it wasn't in 30-30- it wouldn't move off the shelf- 295 brand new - scope(1.5 to 4 bushy) and mounts included- and three shots covers a quarter at 100 with factory ammo- just goes to show you what can happen when you like"oddball" chamberings

I've been carrying a Trapper .44 for years as a bush gun, and have had no complaints. It packs a punch at close range. I have passed on big bucks (one in particular brings a tear to my eye) since I knew it was certainly beyond the .44's range.

But this year however, I switched to a Guide Gun in .45-70. This should pack more punch!
