would like to know if I can cut it to 18" na if I measure from the face of the barrel when action is open or if I have to add 2 3/4" to that . Do I have to call CFC ?

Any info would be great.

James

mcgoo7, no you can only legally cut it down to 18.5" and its usually a better idea to goto 18.6ish.

and no you need to measure with the action closed.

Thanks 18.5" is fine.
So with action closed do you mean run a tape measure down till it bottoms out or from where the chamber stops ?

J

I'd pull a tape from the breech, where a shell's rim would be, towards the muzzle where you want to cut.

I guess with the action closed you could use a dowel to measure the existing barrel and calculate from there but I think if you add an 1/8th of an inch to the breech to muzzle measurement you will be fine....

It's just for grouse , so I will test pattern it as is and see what happens:D
So I just have to adjust for the shell rim and not the whole shell ?

Sorry ,but just checking

The rest of the shell is in the chamber....

Thank you, so if can cut it at 18" + 1/8" as the chamber is part of the barrel length I'll be GTG. I was worried the barrel measurement started after the chamber, meaning 1/8" for the rim + approx. 2.75" for chamber + 18 " or 18.5" for barrel.

Pretty much...depending on how you are cutting you might leave a little extra in case you need to true it up with a file.

Cut-down SG

I was contemplating the same thing, although not quite as short. What are your plans for a bead? This is the only stumbling block I have to overcome.

Measured from the muzzle of the barrel to the face of the breech on a line parallel to the axis of the bore.

Cutting down the barrel isn't as easy as it sounds. A hack job will leave the barrel off center, crooked or just plain ruined.
Leave it at .1" over legal limit.. just to be safe.
Wrap the end of the barrel with tape to protect the finish, then measure twice, mark it and use a pipe cutter.
Gently add a little pressure to it after two or three complete rotations around the barrel. Too much pressure pinches the end of the barrel.
Slow and easy, then, when finished, Measure it again!! to be safe.
Usie a mild round file and gently ream the inside of the barrel to remove any burrs etc.

Like has been said - leave a little. Remember, if after the end of it you're even a teeny tiny bit shorter than 18 it's an illegal gun if the cops ever wanted to push the issue. That's why most gunsmiths actually don't go much shorter than 18.5, just to leave a little incase something needs to be done later. The difference that extra half inch is won't make any real noticable difference when you carry it, but it just makes sure you've got a little extra room so there's no 'doubt'.
