I say its good practise, see a yote while deer hunting to shoot it, no deer will be behind it.

My buddy says let it go, shooting will scare deer.

Who's right?

Drop em. At least if its dead it can't hang around your stand the whole season riling up the deer population. You mayneed to sacrifice a day to win in the end.

Well, I would say shoot it unless its the last couple days of your hunt and you haven't bagged anything yet. Assuming they are not denned up were you are hunting it will probably screw off for a while if you miss it. That being said I have found lots of deer in bushes were I know there is a healthy coyote population so if I was running out of time, why chance it?

I have heard that deer occasionally will investigate a gun shot and come in to see what's up ( I have heard the same about chainsaws and smoke) I have no advice as I am working on my second deer next fall.

Have seen deer and coyotes together frequently. Had several stay in a field while I called coyotes in. Coyotes would come to the call and the deer wouldn't take off until the shot.

IMHO, shoot the coyote then may as well leave the stand for a few hours.

You might be surprised whats coming behind it.Quite a few years back while sitting on an oak ridge I saw a fisher pass me by,then a yote just far enough away he didn't allow a shot. Not ten minutes later an 8 point buck came from the direction where the yote was going, and I shot it.

This season I was sitting in a stand with a doe and two fawns feeding directly below me in some sumacs. My dad was about 500 away and shot at a buck, then tracked it and had 3 more shots over a 20 minute period.

The doe and fawns just went about their business and never even turned to look in the direction when the shots went off, despite being so close. These deer at least weren't spooked by gunfire.

sounds like my dad he thinks gun shots scare deer more then him smoking, farting, coughing and eating garlic....ect.....then he wonders why he only shoots deer when we drive them out of the bush.

He also thinks if you make a single sound in the woods all year you wont see a single deer come season......He still thinks this after I have spent many days out shooting boxes and boxes of ammo as well as hunting grouse and rabbits......#### we have been out hunting yotes with the fox pro screaming bloody murder just to have deer come out in the field...

Ask your buddy where the deer learned what guns are and what they are used for?. The last time I checked the only thing that really scares them is humans in the woods and even then if your quite and dont stink they wont be scared at all weather you got a gun or not.

I have been shooting at the range and had to stop for a Buck and a few Does to pass by. I was also shooting trap when I noticed a nice 12pt standing just inside the hardwoods.....they were not afraid at all

But on the other hand I had a nice buck turn tail and run away from me because my friend let off a shot directly behind me about 800yds....so who really knows......I do know for a fact after a pack of yotes show up on my trail cameras it takes about 3 days to start seeing deer again but I can go out and shoot 500rds of .22-250 to have deer on my cams that night......

I let a yote run into a flock of wild turkey coming down from the roost one morning this spring.
He was 25 yards from me when he put on the brakes as i immagine he smelled me and i let him into the treed area to rip into them as i wasn't sure how my turkey shot would wound or kill him. He stood there sniffing for a good 10 seconds before he continued on into the flock.

The turkeys scattered and i was able to call in a whole bunch a few min after he grabbed one and fled.

Had i had a rifle he'd be a gonner!

I was in one of my deer stands last weekend and a coyote came in right at dusk, presumably after the two fawns behind me. He got 15 yards away and must have winded me cause he 180'd pretty quick. When i brought my rifle up to shoot him he heard me and turned broadside. The 100 grain powerpoint made a bit of mess of him. The deer were back the next morning (possibly that night, i didn't stick around to find out). On a side note the yote turned out to be a decent sized male (48lbs).

Lots of guys I know like to shoot coyotes, foxes and even grouse while hunting deer. I always say you're either hunting deer or huntin' other stuff. There's lots of time for bird hunting and predator shooting but just a short season for deer so why take a chance on screwing up your stand.

Last year, I shot a doe. I had just gotten to her and was checking to make sure she was dead, when I caught movement. There was a nice buck checking out his scrap about 40 yards away. It had been at most 5 minutes, more like 3 minutes. I'm not one to pass up on good fortune, so I shot him too. He didn't seem too concerned that there had just been a shot in the area. I shoot a 7mm RM, so it makes a nice booooom!

I say shoot away!

:agree::)

I dropped a yearling, then 2 more does were shot. After 30 minutes, getting the ATVs so the other 3 deer and me gutting mine, out walks the doe, they are not scared unless they know you are shooting at them.
As for shooting a coyote, now I would drop them or any wolves I see on stand, way too many in either place I hunt. I had a pack of wolves stay just in the shadows on the rifle hunt, I waited until the last minute trying to get one.

nothing screws up your hunt more then fresh yote piss....I only shoot yotes or wolves when big game hunting I wont ruin a stand for a grouse.....even though its tempting sometimes.

My cousin had 2 does come out infront of him and stand around for a couple minutes, then they looked into the woods behind them. A couple minutes later 3 yotes came out and chased the does back into the woods. Well... 2 chased them back into the woods ;)

I didn't shoot the yote I seen and got a deer there the next day. No idea if I would of gotten the deer if I'd shot the coyote the day before.
