Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Millett rings for the T3 that do not require bases? What is the optimal ring base set-up for the T3?

Also looking for a good factory hunting load for the 30-06, anyone have any tried and true suggestions?

Get a Leupold two piece base a Burris Signature rings. Done.

The Millet rings are not that solid with larger calibers. I had some on my .223 Varmint, and they were 'okay', but the Leupold/Burris combo is very strong.

Alternatively, you could get Talley Lightweights (or whatever they're called) - also a popular combo.

For a 'tactical' rig, I'd go with a railed base and TPS rings.

Pretty much everything I've heard about the Millet rings for Tikkas has been crap. I would avoid them myself.

Almost any factory 30-06 load will be a decent hunting load as long as you choose an appropriate bullet weight (usually 150 - 180, although there are some applications for both heavier and lighter bullets.) What do you plan on hunting? Any of the standard bullets will be good for deer sized game, and some may choose a load with a "premium" bullet if they're hunting moose or elk. Are they needed? Probably not, but why cheep out on the least expensive part of hunting.

So Talley makes bases and rings for the Tikka? Anyone know any places in the Lower Mainland that stock them?

Talley makes a one-piece affair that is the base and the ring all in one unit - going rate in Canada is anywhere from $50 to $80, depending on the current exchange rate. You can see a list of vendors here: http://www.talleyrings.com/visit.php -- looks like you'd probably have to mail order them, but if you order from one of the outfits in BC, shipping would probably only take a day or two.

Side note - Talley "low" rings, are not all that "low" - they're more like what I would consider a "medium" -- they'll work for scopes with up to a 44MM objective lens on them. Unless you are using a scope with a 50MM objective, and/or just like having your scope sit high on the rifle, the low rings are probably what you want.

I tried the Millets on an M595 (same dovetailed receiver as T3) and was very disappointed. As many have pointed out there are a number of superior alternatives to the Millets.

Millet mounts for Tikka

I have some Millet "Tikka Angle Lock" mounts on my Tikka M695, perfect fit and nothing to say wrong about them, they are very stable on my 7MMRM.

Didn't have much luck using the Angle-Locs directly into the dovetails, but if you can find them using the Millet bases as well to match them works okay. I got a set right from Millet in the US, no problem getting them. Went back to the Opti-Locs, way better.

Another option is the Burris Signature Zee ring, with the poly inserts. They fit on the weaver #61 bases. I've used these on a Tikka and it was a solid set-up.

I use the Tikka Opti Lock rings and bases. They have held my scope through thick and thin.

I have been shooting a variety of loads, all factory out of my T3 .30/06. FOr mule deer, look to the Federal Fusion bullets. Affordable, accurate as hell in my Tikka at least, and perform well. The one deer I took with them was with 165gr, chronied extactly what was on the box. 230m shot, off a rest. Double lung and heart, one dead deer. Penetrated through a rib, and stopped under the skin on the off side shoulder. Perfect mushroom. Weight retention was as advertized.

...What is the optimal ring base set-up for the T3?...

DNZ (Dednutz) one piece rings/base.

I just mounted up two sets of these on my Tikkas last week. Let me tell you, if you enjoy nice machining you'll love these! Easy to mount and super light (after all, they're such a nice light gun, may as well keep 'em that way if possible!). Got low mounts, & my Bushnell 2.5-10 X 40 is about 3/32 off the barrel, just the way I wanted it. I also have a 4-12 X 40 A0 which was a bit problematic, as it was just a hair too low, so I had to shim it up a tiny bit, but I managed.

Planning on doing a writeup about them, but in the meantime, here's a photo of my Tikka .270 Win wearing a Bushnell 2.5-10X40 mounted on a DNZ low mount:

Ordered the two of them from Dednutz directly over the phone. They're based in North Carolina & mailed 'em to me. Took about 10 days. By the time shipping & taxes were paid, ran about $85 each, but well worth it in my view.

Just my $.02
