Looking a maybe getting an SKS and was wondering if I used Remington Core-Lokt Pointed Soft Points 125gr bullet if it would be enough to take down a deer ethically?

Thanks

It has almost the same power as a Win. 30-30

Win 30-30 150 gr bullet - muzzle energy 1945 ft-lb
7.62x39 150 gr bullet - muzzle energy 1810 ft-lb

It will do as HeadDamage indicated. My friend has taken a deer with a SKS.

Is it enough??? Absolutely! Remember, 1000 ft lbs of energy @ target is the recommended minimum. The 7.62x39 does that inside of 200 meters, roughly.

Cheers
Jay

7.62X39 is plenty for deer. You my have a problem finding Rem Cor-Lokt ammo for it,or any American made hunting ammo in 7.62X39 for that matter.

I bought some Seller & Bellot 7.62 x 39mm soft points for hunting from William's Arms. They had lots. You may not find any made in the US but these ones will work great on deer and there seems to be a lot of them around.

Federal Power Shok 7.62x39mm 123gr
100yards: 2030fps 1125Ft-Lbs
200yards: 1780fps 860Ft-Lbs
300yards: 1550fps 655Ft-Lbs
(according to the box)

Federal Power Shok 30-30Win 125gr
100yards: 2083fps 1204Ft-Lbs
200yards: 1656fps 761Ft-Lbs
300yards: 1309fps 476Ft-Lbs
(according to the website)

Federal makes heavier 30-30 rounds but not 762soviet.

If you know a reloader, he could also do you up some heavier loads using bullets designed for 303 british, as they are the same dia. Some hot loaded 150's would really hammer those deer, not that factory 123's wouldn't work, but if you're worried...

I have taken 3 deer with 7.62x39 and have found it to be very effective on deer. All have passed through and created significant wound channels. i have never taken a shot past 140 m so no experience past that range but i would not likely take a much longer shot than that where i hunt anyway.

got a doe this year with my CZ858 with 123gr serbian ammo..dropped her in her tracks..through both lungs...very impressed with it and very little meat damage compared to my 25-06 or .308 so i wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

YES!!!! in my opionion the 7.62x39mm is one of the best rounds you can get for the thick brush almost as good balistically as the 30-30 with a little less recoil

i dropped a doe with my CZ-858 this year it was my first deer so when i saw it (having previously missed 2 deer the year before with an enfield id never shot beofre;)) i figured it was going down this time so i kinna panicked and opened up on it with like 3 shots in around 1 second lol:D all 3 shots went a bit low and jsut nicked her belly then i took a few milliseconds to calm down and aimed a single shot to the neck and droped it in its tracks:) it was running full tilt through dense brush coming at me at about a 45 degree angle.

the next day my friends dad shot a huge 11 point with a single shot though the lungs with an sks went around 25 yards then it was down this was at around 50 yards.

ive also seen him shoot 2 other deer with the sks 1 was a single shot kill and the other 2 shots

so if your hunting in the brush where ranges wont exceed 150 yards or so the 7.62 is a great round and the sks is a decent gun to shoot it out of.

Yep works ok for close range.
I took this one at 150yards with a remington799/Zastava S&B 123gr sp right throunght the neck and spine.

Ammo for that calibre is getting harder and harder to find. I have a Mini-30 that collects dust as 15 years ago I could buy fullmetalcase shells for under 3$ a box. Was fun with the 30 round mags but this calibre is on the governments #### list as its the AK calibre. I beleive it will get even worse to find ammo in the future.

this would be my preferred round for deer. Ballistics are great cuz slower moving bullets penetrate better. and the soft point expand nicely. Why re-invent the wheel. recoil is light making practice more pleasant, flinching becomes a non issue. Great to 200 yards and if the game is further get closer. ITs called hunting not artillery practice.

Ammo not a problem. Buy a case is surp and use that to practice and buy a few boxes of Priva Partizan SP that is around now and that should do you for years to come for hunting.

Just windex the baby down after the corrosive.
