ive got a N frame in 45acp, but when i place the rounds in half moons, or try using 45 auto rim, i cant quiet close the cylinder. Any suggestions? ive got it disassembled and would like to play with it tonight if i get the chance. thanks.

i dont have a set of feeler gauges, but there is a slight gap between cylinder and barrel, more so than my model 10. any way to close that gap and expand the one between the back of the cylinder and the frame?

i bought it in a big package deal, and i knew about it then. the guy had inherited it from an uncle who is deceased.

i sold off most of what i bought, but i really like this big ol' N frame, and am keeping it, so id like to get it going.

im at a friends right now, but when i get home later tonight ill post picks.

yes. chamber are clean. to check the headspace in a revolver do i need a set of 45 go, no-go gauges like a rifle?

the 45 auto rim rounds just barely dont fit, i dont need the cylinder to ride forward much. ive tried tightening the rod as much as i can, but it was already quite tight. A friend suggested i check for shims the push the cylinder back, so i disassembled it last night, but didnt find any.

has " S.&W. D.A. 45" stamped on the right side of barrel, so i assume its 45, not .455.

i dont have any of those to try. I took some pics, but i dont know how to post em, so ill have thedutchess do it after we eat supper.

gallen270 that doesn't look like much space between the back of the cylinder and the recoil plate. I have had revolvers in 45 ACP/Auto Rim and there is a lot of space between the frame and the rear of the cylinder. I'd be willing to bet she's in 455 Webley. I have a Smith & Wesson model II hand ejector in 455 Webley that looks just like yours.

edit: gallen, I just measured the cylinder on my Hand Ejector in 455 Webley and came up with a reading of 1.590" which is very close to your reading of 1.586" I'd bet my life that you have a 455 Webley.

awwww f*ck

how is the barrel stamped on the 455? is it .45 or .455?

i'll see if i can pick up some .455 cases or cartridges and try them. none here. any way i can figure it out here without cases?

whats the diference between the .455 and .45 N frame?

hmmmm, just googled it, and found here is a 45 webley that takes a .452 diameter bullet and has a case lenght of .82'', and a .455 (mkII) that takes a .454 diameter bullet and has a case lenght of .77''. which we talking about?

so maybe the gun doesnt have a problem after all? I got it dirt cheap, so i didnt research it none when i bought it, then it sat in my cabinet and ive only been playing with it this week.

is ammo availible? can it be made from another case.

mods, feel free to bump this to 'pistols and revolvers' as i dont think its a 'whats wrong with it thread' anymore, possibly a 'wtf is it thread'

w ww.cruffler.com/Features/JAN-02/historic-january02.html <<found that online, and my gun DOES have british proof marks similiar to what enlarged about half way down the page.

but on the bottom of the barrel its stamped "United States Property"

so......

Gallen,

Did you try measuring the inside of the cylinder to the shoulder? (I'm assuming your chambers have a shoulder.) That might give a clue to the cartridge. Also, I can't find the complete dimensions on the .455 Webley anywhere, but looking at the illustration in Cartridges of the World, it looks like the rim is thinner than that on the .45 Colt. If so, that might explain the tight clearance behind the cylinder.

Have you check to see that it is not a 45 long colt, the US used this round for a long time.
Have you looked for matching numbers on the cylinder, it should match the number on the frame, yoke.

I have a 1917 S&W in 45 ACP here beside me. I'll dig up calipers and measure the cylinder dimensions, it's quite possible that the gun was fitted with a new cylinder at some point in it's life. The 45 Colt cylinders are a fair bit longer then the 45 ACP cylinders, so I doubt that's the answer. I'm guessing a 455 cylinder was put in at one time, but that's just a guess at the moment. Thanks for the pics, they make troubleshooting a lot easier. - dan

Ok, cylinder length is 1.5395" on the 45 ACP version. Clearance at the rear of the cylinder to the frame is 0.1060" as near as I can measure. Looks like 0.6700" to the shoulder in the cylinder. Check your measurements against these and see what you come up with, and maybe we can ID the cartridge a little better. - dan

Pretty sure if he had .106 inches clearance at the rear of the cylinder, the .45AR would fit (.089 rim).
My mic is down at the moment, but the .455 rim is slightly thinner than a dime. I would say if a dime would fit, or almost fit in the space, that it will be the .455.

FWIW, a dime is .048 according to my mic.
