I don't have one... yet. But I was wondering if it was legal to shorten a VZ58's (restricted) barrel. I'm not looking for the semantics of the whole operation, as I am a tool and die maker. The question at hand is can it be done legally, because I would like to make myself a Krinkov style VZ58(possibly even a folding stock!).

i suggest you wait and see what the next shipment of VZ from marstar has to offer. john said he is bringing in VZ58krinkov.

Actually, you can't legally shorten your barrel under 18.5" even if it is already Restricted (and already under 18.5").
Restricted Handgun barrels can be shortened as long as they remain 106mm or greater.

I know there are people who will freak out when I say that. But, just try and get a licensed business to shorten your barrel and see what they have to say. :)

I too want a Krinkov styled 58 and it can be done.
The new super short barrel must be made from a new blank by a licensed buisness (e.g. Dlask, Bits Of Pieces, Ellwood Epps, etc.) ~Cheers

I'm thinking the Marstar will not be short enough. I'm thinking they'll just be cut ahead of the front sight and use normal furniture.

I want a 7" barrel! :D

So using your logic.... I can't cut any AR barrels, 20, 16, 14.5, 10.5 to any length I want even tho they are already restricted? Rite...

There is nothing illegal with shortening a VZ58s 15.5" barrel to anything else that you want right up to the gas block.

Shortening the longer non-restricted version to under 18.5 is a no-no.

I've got a barrel that is cut to 8 1/4"working on the furniture mods now. Problem I am haveing is it may have to have a captive gas piston as with the shortened system it will not lift up enough to clear gas block.

U will have problems

But not legally - a restricted is still a restricted no matter how much you shorten - the trouble is restricteds are chrome barrels - You can cut if you are good at cutting chrome barrels without flaking - the problem will be in enlarging the gas hole in the barrel. After the enlarging - the chrome will flake when shooting - and you have a ruined rifle.
I think the Marstar krinks are new manufacture - but non chrome barrels -{may be to avoid this problem}

Exactly. I know it's not what you wanted to hear and many people have done it... it's just as of late people are taking a closer look at the wording and playing it on the safe side.
Realistically, since it is a restricted already, the chances of you getting in ka-ka for your own personal firearm is low.
It's not like your cutting barrels and selling them :)

But yeah... cutting a barrel to under 18.5" (even if it is already restricted) is a no-no. Do as you like though :) just passing on what I've been told when I wanted my barrel shortened ;) (You can ask any dealers at the top of the page)

You were mislead. I know of three people who can and will do the modification if I wanted.

Chopping Restricted Rifle barrels: I don't really care if anyone does it - Actually, I love seeing chopped guns. I'm just telling you what is going on. It's ultimately all interpretation (and I think it is stupid to not be able to chop restricted barrels).

To play it on the safe side you have a new barrel made for lengths under 18.5" in a semi-auto. That's all I'll say on the topic, there's been half a dozen posts on this already with 1/2 the people saying you can... the other half saying you can't (the side saying you can't are usually dealers and manufacturers who spend way more time with the law then me, so I take their knowledge and information as being more current/accurate). I'll chose the safe side since I love my guns too much to risk losing them over something so dumb.

Chopping a prohibited rifle: A prohib is already prohibited. Do yo want to make a prohib? I hope you have your 12.x. If you have a prohib fill your boots... I don't see how you can make a prohib more phohibited. ;)

Now, with that said...
I really want to see pics of the 8 1/4" VZ ;)
