Glock or S&W M&P?

Buying my first handgun here in a few weeks. I have them narrowed down to the glock or the M&P. Which is better? Which one is better for a rookie handgunner? Also which caliber should I get? 9mm or .40. This will of course be used strictly for target and club shooting. I am an avid hanloader so I will likely shoot the living piss out of it. Let's here some opinions. I would consider other suggestions in the same price range but i 'm pretty sure I like these two the best.
 
Get 9mm (I find .40 too snappy) - best bet is to try both to see which one fits you better.

Ideally I would say get both. Both platforms have a big following so you'll get plenty of answers.
 
I was in the same boat, however that was when the guns were both the same price. The M&P is now considerably higher. I went with the Glock as the angle of the grip "fit" me better. The M&P is more of a 90 degree with the gun and seems a little further forward. It does come with interchangeable backstraps however. As far as a first handgun goes, might as well start with the 9mm.
 
glock 9m hands down, you can shoot the p**s out of it, I know guys with over 200k rounds throug theirs, I have maybe 5k rnds throug mine and still looks new. I am bias, so get the M&P second.
 
Owned both, wasn't really a difference between them other then aesthetics. Its an Apples and Apples argument.
 
I've had a Glock 34 and a M&P both in 9mm. I preferred the M&P. The M&P had a better feeling trigger IMO and fit my han better. Glocks have a bigger following because they have been around longer.
 
If you are going to shoot a lot, go 9mm.
Both are excellent pistols. I own S&W M&P40 and like it alot.
But I think prices are lower now on Glocks, leaves you some $$$ for ammo.
 
Just checked the prices on the Glock 17 and the M&P from Wolesale sports and they are basically the same price.
I've also been tossing around the idea of getting a pistol.
 
Something I consider a plus for the Glock is that you can get an Advantage Arms 22LR conversion it. The kit seems to go for 350 - 375 in the EE, somewhere between 400 and 450 new. Its fun to go out for a night and shoot off 500 rounds without breaking the bank.

Either is a good choice, however after trying Glock and M & P I ended up with an XD which came with a better stock trigger than both of them- plus a fully supported chamber.
