This is a poll on the optimal calibre for deer – 150lb to 250lb size range less than 200 yards.

Much has been said about “over kill” and “under gun”. What in you opinion is the optimal calibre that you feel most comfortable with?

Please don’t limit your choice to what you have in your safe to-day, but what you think would be the best choice combining factors such as availability/cost of ammo, recoil, power, accuracy…

Note: This is the first of three polls that I am running. The others being:
The Optimal Moose/Elk Round
The Optimal Large Game (combined Deer/moose/Elk) Round.

To make this meaningful, we need at least 500 to vote each.

30-06 180 grain core lokt soft point it will flatten any deer in the woods it's a soft point that opens up quick like a much lighter 150-165 grain but penatrates deep like a 180grain should and they make an awfule sized hole and it drops em faster than any bullet ive ever seen and it's a serious brush buster if it has to be

For deer only, I voted for and use myself a 257 Roberts.

With moose maybe thrown in the mix, I'd go with a 308 or 30/06.

Though I don't use one (I'm a 30-06 man myself), I believe it would be the 270win. You said up to 200yards, but in most spots out west 300 yards would be a more realistic limit (I would suspect out east as well). The 270win with 130gr bullet will do this comfortably with no holdover, and less recoil than other cartridges.

Any standard capacity case with a bullet between 6.5 and 7.62mm. My personal favorites are the .260, 6.5x55 and 7mm-08.

I have been using 25-06 for the past 5 years for deer, and moose with great results. It was the optimal choice in some of my hunting scenarios, others not so much.If you hunt within the limits of any of the above cartiriges every one can be optimal.
