Russian SKS45 long thread.

Thanks Fry. I'm not much for unnecessary sanding either - will give this a try first with my Norinco (it can't make it look any worse). Does the Seal - Miniwax polyurethane SATIN help to harden up the chinese stock at all? (i.e. so you can't pick it apart with your fingers)?

glang1, you have a nice representative example of a refurbished Soviet SKS. As eos stated, the gas cylinder was EP'd upon initial build assembly to the carbine. The gas piston, rear sight, and extractor were also EP'd upon build. Some, though not all, refurbished carbines also have had their butt plate and bayonet so marked.

The gas cylinder and gas piston were also EP'd to the carbine upon rebuild, as these components along with the stock, were not retained as a unit during refurbishing. An extractor that is unnumbered has been replaced.

The twisted wire spring for the driving rod are typical Soviet, and can be found throughout their Kalashnikov series, in the hammer spring, etc. It provides a more durable spring that is less likely to fatigue and lose strength. I believe the Germans used the twisted wire system in their MG42 series.

a couple of coats of satin poly should make it a lot harder, and keep the sheen down (the regular non-satin is pretty shiny)

I have used a Birtch and Casey Gun Stock sealer after a very light sanding.

Does anyone know where the rifles are coming from? I read on another board that these SKS rifles are coming from Croatia.. I also heard Ukraine.

It was excellent. Provides a great shell!

Personally I haven't found anything else that I like other than the Miniwax polyurethane satin.

Sorry to hear that your SKS is not in the shape you were hoping! I hope your able to resolve it with the dealer, I am very curious as to what condition it arrived in???

Here's hoping you track down a good one!

Cheers
Jay

Still can;t contact the dealer.

In terms of condition, well, someone took a hand file to part of the mag housing, removing LOTS of finish and scratching it up real bad. There is active rust on the buttplate, mag housing and in the chamber. Big scratch to the finish on the receiver action cover, heavily sanded stock, and renumbered stock, gas tube and piston.

Was assured over the phone it was a non-refurb. I'm quite pissed. I cannot see how this rifle can be graded hand select and I feel quite ripped off. Again, not pointing fingers at the dealer just yet until I have a chance to communicate with them (I've written 2 e-mails and pm'd their CGN account. Plan to also call tonight.

ok, well the good news is I got through on the phone and the dealer is taking it back and refunding shipping too. Bad news is they are all sold out of everything but the dregs, so I get no Russian SKS.

I won't be posting pics or commenting further - the dealer service is very fair and cordial in this matter. I spoke to the owner/operator and he thinks there might have been a mixup and my rifle grabbed from the wrong pallet.

I'm a bit sad though that I was about the 5th guy to place an order early last march, pre-paid for a hand select nearly a year ago, and end up with no gun, while some guys bought shooter grades 4 weeks ago and were shipped unissued SKS carbines.

Sometimes life just isn't fair.

If it's with Frontier, orders were taken way before March. I thought I was one of the first when I placed an order the same hour the ad was placed, but apparently local word went around first and people got a few orders in before I did.

If it wasn't Fronter, then... oh well.

Sucks to be you Claven, it's unfortunate that you're out on this matter. Perhaps someone will dump a nice one on EE for near the same price paid. :(

sorry to hear about that,claven2,it really sucks.i'm sure when the next batch comes in the people who got lost in the shuffle will get 1st pick.
i ordered beginning of jan. or late dec.(i don't remember when)

Good news...I heard back from Marlin today. Due to all of the orders going out, they shipped my riffle via Can Post and ammo will be shipped out DHL on Monday.

I have had great service from Marlin, I hope my gun is as nice as he says.

For those who don't know, the remaining batches will all be Bell. I won't buy a bell as the mag were truly butchered when they limited them.

And to Fry: The rifles were ANNOUNCED in February. Frontier did not accept firm orders via credit card until March. I know. I was b/c I was told No.5 when I called and gave my card info ;)

Still doesn't change the fact that guys who ordered in the last couple months typically got nicer rifles shipped sooner than I got.

I'm so bummed about this whole experience. If I had ordered a shooter grade, I'd probably accept the gun for what it is, but I had specifically and politely noted that if it was a refurb, DO NOT BOTHER SHIPPING IT TO ME. Then in addition to it being a refurb, it was rusty and had a well sanded stock.

I actually was not buying this gun to shoot it at all (I have several other SKS rifles to shoot). I bought it specifically to photograph a non-refurb for the milsurps.com website to help other collectors out. So much for that idea.

They say it was an honest mistake and I DO believe that it was and I was shipped the wrong rifle by accident, but now that they are sold out I am SOL.

Anyhow, off to the post office to return it. It anyone's lookign for a beater to sporterize, you might be able to call and reserve this one...

Too bad too, it had a nice shiny chrome bayo - one of the only redeeming features.

First batch has been sent out from Frontier. If you go through this thread, you can see examples. I will get mine in the second shipment. It is on its way.
As for SIR, Curtton had called them and they are still waiting, first supplier was delayed and they are now getting them from a second supplier, but they will cost more than advertised.
