Just wondering if anyone out there has tried one of the new cz Sp01 shadows..
Ive heard decent things about them but havent had a chance to try one. Also i could be wrong but i dont think the shadow comes in .40 s&w but the tactical model does?

Any feedback is welcome.

I have the Shadow and SP-O1. Excellent pistols. The Shadow is to heavy for IDPA (Mine is down to 39.2oz and I am running out of easy answers), while the SP-01 is OK with lighter grips. The Shadow is apparently the winningest pistol in IPSC Production I am told so that should kind of answer your question if it is IPSC you are going to use the gun for.

Excellent sights and a great trigger out of the box.

I bought an SP-01 shadow for production

It is pretty well set up for IPSC. The design sits low in the hand and is heavy aiding in recoil recovery. Fibre optic sights, extended controls and magwell. Decent trigger.

trigger gets smoother and a bit lighter after several hundred rounds. trigger itself can be replaced to have it closer to the shooter's finger on double action. however, it is a pain to take apart as there are a lot of small springs and parts that have a tendency to fly off if you are not careful. best to leave complete disassembly to someone who is familiar or have a bunch of spares. Best pistol for the money

I handled an SP01 recently with the thought of getting a Shadow for IPSC production. The distance to the trigger turned me off since I don't have the longest fingers. Modifying the trigger isn't an option for me since I shoot production.
Has anyone replaced the grips with the skinny aluminum CZ ones? I'd be curious to know if it makes a big difference.

I have both the Shadow and a CZ85Combat.

I have the same problem with the long DA pull on both. I find the grips much too large and the guns tend to twist in my hands when I fire them.

I tried Marshall wood grips which were better but not good enough.

I bought a set of the skinny aluminum grips and they feel a lot better. I hope to hit the range tommorrow to get a real feel for them.

Did you weigh Bob? I used to own an Sp01 and the frame seemed heavier and the Shadow frame seems lighter as it looks like cast. Have never weighed and have not compared the two side by side. Maybe its just in my mind.

What is the difference in weight?

Thanks in advance.

To get my Shadow to 39oz I changed the grips to Marshall wood grips - maple I think?-, changed the mag break -and took a bunch of metal off it as well- and finally I had to work on the mags. Removed a lot of the plastic base and then windowed the mag body itself. Came in just under 39. Now I have to decide if I want to shoot it in IDPA enough to warrant working over all my mags.

Can't decide....might just stick with my M&P or CZ85Combat......

Hi

The Shadow weighs in stock at 41.1 oz with a mag inserted.

The SP-O1 weighs in at 39.6 oz.with a mag inserted.

While the frames are identical, or nearly so, the SP-01 slide and frame have a cut out for the firing pin block while the Shadow does not. This accounts for the majority of the weight difference.

The SP-01 can be made legal by changing the grips to Dennis Marshall wooden grips which brings the weight down to 38.4 oz. and the gun becomes legal for IDPA SSP, thence ESP if the shooter chooses to start cocked and locked.

One of the quirks in our rules allows CZ USA, a wholly owned sub of CZ UB to import the SP-O1 into the US, remove the firing pin block (Done by the "factory"), and sell the gun as the SP-O1 Custom. I should add they also they change the sights and do a trigger job on the gun. The CZ SP-O1Custom is legal to be shot in USPSA but not IPSC I believe. It is legal for IDPA.

Joe T. in Calgary has had his and his son's Shadow worked on by Mathew Mink in the US and Mathew has got the weight down to under 39oz legally. Joe intends to let me know how they shed the remaining .2oz when he receives the gun back from Mathew.

Until then I will be shooting the SP-O1 in SSP and the Shadow in IPSC PRoduction. The SP-O1 has night sights on it presently but those will go for the competition sights used by the Shadow (Maybe save some weight - :))

I am told both guns are made the same way. The frames are not identical though as they come from different production runs judging from the date of manufacture. The Shadow is undercut more by the back of the trigger guard and the grip ahead of the beavertail is cut deeper on the Shadow.

ps One option open to me is to window the mags. I would rather not but may have to if I want to use the gun in IDPA.

Spo1 & Shadow

Could someone list all the differences between the Spo1 & the Shadow? I.e. what exactly are the differences in the frame?
Thanks

Hi

Got my Shadow back from Gunnar after trigger work. Gun, with Dennis Marshall grips now weighs in at 39.1oz on a kitchen scale. I will have to weigh it on a government graduated scale. I may be OK.....or not.

Well the SP-01 makes weight with ease so I'll use it until I carve up my mags.:D

By the way the SP-01 shows date of manufacture as 2006 while the Shadow is 2008. That no doubt accounts for the variance in fthe frame cut outs I suppose. I have not heard of anyone with a SP-01 with a frame marked newer than 2006.
