ya i know its probley been talked about allready.

I have a 25-06 and what i ant is your input about useing it to hunt moose. elk and bear with it this season. My reason is i have a bum shoulder right now, the 338 and 7mm hurt to much. i dont want to develope a flinch.

It'll do it and lots of guys have. I've shot a couple elk with a .25 06 over the years. Use a good bullet and choose your shot carefully and you should be fine.
 
With appropriate bullets I wouldn't hesitate to use it on any of the animals that you mentioned.

This is an extremely flat shooting round if you are an ethical hunter and wait for the perfect shot you could push the distances on moose to 300 yards.

yup it will work for sure with the right bullet. I will be using a .257wby for moose this year with a 100gr Barnes TSX its a bit faster but I'm sure the moose wont know the difference.
 
With what's available in some of the more specialised ammo, and bullet choices for the reloader, perhaps, but there's other calibers I'd much prefer. While in many cases the 25-06 would do the job, on that possibly one and only chance opportunity raking shot on that yearly hunting trip, at the south end of a departing Moose, I'd like something with more penetrating capabilities.
 
I've never used a .25-06, but I'd be more inclined to go with a .260 Rem or a 6.5x55, just for the longer, heavier bullets, still with mild recoil...
 
Good advice here.

I would choose a 6.5 140-160gr over a 100 gr 1/4 bore any day.
 
A 120 grn 257 dia should offer about the same SD as a140 grn 6.5 . when it comes down to it , perfect broadside shot through the ribs 243 dia should be more than adequate . Although if you are anything like me you'd probably feel more comfortable with something a little bigger . Just in case you marksmanship sway's a bit when you see the contents of you'r freezer walk out in front of you .
 
The guy already has the .25-06 I'm sure he's not going to run and get a new gun why does this happen every time some one posts a question like this.......YES we know there is always better caliber choices for everything...

A 100gr TSX out of a .25-06 will preform just fine and if you do some searching you will find guys have taken head on shots on moose with this same load and the bullet exited the rear hip making a full 6ft+ pass through and the bullets never recovered.

55.5gr RL22 100gr TSX 3400fps done deal don't worry about anything else but making the shot count 300yds or less.
 
Lots of guys go out and buy gear that is better suited to the game their hunting. Maybe a bum shoulder should = new rifle....
 
I have used it for the afore mentioned animals. Worked well. But I recently switched to a 260 remington, only because I got it in a sako very cheap.
 
as someone who is unemploed i will stick with what i have on hand. A box of barnes or nosler bulets is cheaper then going out and spending a bunch of cash for a new gun.

Yes there is better calibers out ther and in my safe as I mentioned ( 338 win mag, 7mm rem mag, and my custom 338-06.) I don't want to develope a flinch. For all the guy's who gave me the input i wanted thank's to all others read and understand first please

1) You didn't say either way about a new rifle.

2) You ask for opinions, you get opinions, whether its what you want to hear or not.:)

Get the heaviest bullet you can and giver!
 
Opinions were requested, and when you do so, you don't always get the answers you want, you get what you asked for opinions. If you merely want a pat on the back and total agreement, ask the questions and come out with the answers, while you're looking in the mirror.
Almost feel like we were 'being played'.:(
 
The 25-06 with a 100 gr TSX is the bee knees on anything up to Elk, for Moose and Bear I would go up to the 115 gr. it will do the jopb as long as you do yours and hit the boilermaker, probably get a thru and thru on a large Blackie with it. Les

Limbsaver make a strap on recoil pad that is a great piece of kit. Not sure how or why it is so effective at reducing felt recoil, but I don't care. All I know is that it was well worth the $30.00 it cost. FS
