So who hunts with one ?

Ive ordered one (Stiga mauser) and keeping it with open sights only for a walking around / woods / scabbard / truck gun .

Id really hate to be any kind of game getting hit by a 286 gr. .366 bullet @ 2300-2400 fps !!!

Anyways, Im cross referencing some loading data and scrounging the components, cant wait to try her out in the spring.

I'm a fan of all the 9.3 calibres. I'm just waiting for my 9.3 x 64 Brenneke to get back from the 'smith right now. I haven't hunted with the 9.3 x 62, but I plan on buying or building one after this one is finished. Should be good for just about anything in the world.

Erik.

Count me in on the fan club...my T3 is a really good shooter.
The first time I shot a 9.3x62 was in about 1963 and it belonged to a long-deceased mentor, an interesting chap who taught me how to handload, cast bullets...all those things a young man should know....

I have a 9,3x57-with a norma peep sight, and it carries nicely.Norma makes ammunition, but its hard to get, so I am reloading using 286 gr privipartizans, bit slower than the 9,3x62-but still moving at about 2000 fps, which has been described as being hit by the hammer of Thor

Im also looking into the privipartizans for loading. price seems right....I cant imagine i need premium bullets at that weight and SD. I tink I may need a recoil pad :)

H4895 worked well in my x62 behind the 250 and 270gr projectiles. I wish I had gone ahead and had this caliber made 12 years ago instead of my 338-06. Is it better? No, but it has more history.
I've gone back to the 9,3x57. Mostly because I had a great time the first year packing that HVA for my moose trip. Secondly I could not resist the rifle!
I have some 285gr Lapua's to try. I wish they made a more traditional, round nose bullet so it would regulate to my iron sights.

actually, the 9,3x57 doesn't seem to have excessive recoil, even tossing that heavy bullet.I didn't get a chance to try it on a moose last fall but am hoping to see how effective it is on spring bear this year.I don't imagine anything hit solidly is going to go far.I;ve got some cast bullets I'd like to try too if I can get any decent accuracy out of

I use both the X62 and X57 ,as far as powders go I prefer RL15 in the X62, H335 in the X57 with the 286 Privi's, and for ratherbefishin wanting to try cast bullets, 15 gr of unique behind a 290 flat base lead bullet gives good accuracy and 1425fps in my X57.
Ive shot both a 1600 lb steer in the head and my partner whacked an elk this past year with the Privi's both bangflop's with excellent penetration and 80% weight retention in the elk after breaking a shoulder, travelling through about 3 feet of elk and found under the hide on the opposite side on a 125 yard shot, muzzle velocity was right around 2350 fps.
good choice on a wonderful cartridge !

The only thing I have that burns quickly enough for this case is IMR-4064 and BLC-2 . Im going to try to stick to my existing inventory...I know a lot of people are using RL-15 for this.

BL-C2 was recomended to me for the x57 so I bet it will be a very good one to try in your 62.

In my x57 my favorite was H335.
Duplicating factory rounds the recoil is quite tolerable. Even my starting loads in mine let you know when you touched it off. But it is also a full pound lighter than my HVA was.

When I bought the rifle, the load the guy was using was imr 4350. I didn't like that, at the time my only manual with 9.3x62 was speer #12. I use speer 270gr bullets and they list all slow powders in the book. imr 4350, 4831, and the 414. I now see in the nosler book that none of those are listed. I'm gonna try some rl-15 and maybe some varget since I have both here. Damn, I got three lbs of H414!

You best get a 7x57 then. 414 is stellar in that cartridge and it is a great combo with the 9,3.;)
My small experience with the 9,3 bore should not be taken as gospel. It may work great in your rifle. Hope it does.
Let us know how the rl15 works, I haven't had a chance to try that one yet.

I've hunted with a '62 for the last few years and the rifle/cartridge has become my favorite - replacing my .35 Whelen.

My rifle holds 4+1, weighs a shade over 8 lbs(scoped) and handles like a wand with it's 21" barrel. Recoil is like a maidens caress.

I've tried quite a few different powder/bullet combinations and have pretty much settled on max loads of RL15 or Varget with Prvi Partizan, Hornady or Nosler Partition bullets. With either of these powders velocity is around 2375 fps but the Varget gives me better(marginally) accuracy.

I use the same powders with the Speer 270 gr bullet for around 2425 fps. The best group I ever shot was a 0.72" group at 200 meters using the Speer and Varget.

I tried H414 with the Speer bullet. I started with 60 grain(starting load from the Hodgdon site but a max load from Speer #12 - go figure) and worked up to a max of 63 grains(Hodgdon lists this as max for a 286 gr bullet). Top velocity was 2476 fps(24" barrel before I had the barrel cut). This velocity matched or exceeded the velocities from RL15 but accuracy sucked.

With 286 gr Prvi Partizan bullets and a max load of 67 gr of H4350, I was getting 2400 fps out of a 21" barrel. Getting 67 gr of H4350 and a bullet into the case took special skills:bangHead:

When i talk about max loads, I mean loads that I've worked up to in my rifle. Fired primers are round and I never have a sticky bolt. I've put over 400 rounds through the rifle using the same 50 Norma brass(actually, 46 brass. Some got lost during the killing:)). The brass I have left is still going strong. Partial resizing is my friend.

The bottom line is that there can be a lot of versatility when loading for the 9.3X62 so don't throw out the H414.

59.5 gr RL15 (Varget would have been smart to try as well) in Lapua cases with CCI magnum primers gives me 2350 FPS with 286 Normas in my Husqvarna M98 iron-sighted walking around rifle. Yeah, I'm a fan.

Tried something like that with a 286 TSX. Damned things stuck in my seating stem and pulled back out of the case (and were a pig's ass to get out of the seater at that point). Ended up using the RN stem in my 416 Rigby die and still couldn't get them in deep enough. 286 TSX is too much bullet for that case given it's (bellet's) size. Stick to cup and core or Partition-style bullets. At that velocity range they're perfect.

9.3x62 is a nice calibre, but for me it's essentially .375 H&H light. I went for the H&H, much easier to get components and ammo for, makes African minimum requirements, and I can load 300gr at 2000fps (I put mine over 38.0grs of 4227) and have 9.3 performance and light recoil. Or, step that 300gr up to 2,650, now that's more like the hammer of Thor. With the .375, you open a slew of bullet choices from 200 to 380grs, high BC long range bullets, etc.
