I would be devestated if I was issued an M1 Carbine in WW2. It seems like such a inadequite weapon. M1 Garand, with a Thompson M1 slung over my back, and a Colt M1911-A1 sidearm...now we're talking.

Any M1 Carbine lovers out there?..please explain the appeal/use/importance.

Is your opinion based on a video game..... Maybe COD WOW?
If so then it is not very accurate. The M1 is a fine rifle with good effective range and stopping power. Sucks in COD tho :p

The M1 Carbine was developed to replace the M1911 as a defensive weapon for non-combat soldiers (i.e. engineers) because it had a far better range and accuracy than the currently issued pistol, that coupled with the fact that the average non-combat personnel of the time could not accurately shoot a pistol to save their life, literally. The M1 Carbine was adopted to fill this role as it was chambered in the intermediate .30 Carbine cartridge that was sufficient in both accuracy and stopping power out to 300 yards, as opposed the the 50 yard maximum range of the .45 M1911.

The M1 Carbine was not designed to compete with the Garand, or the Thompson but did prove itself to be much more efficient as a defensive weapon than the M1911, as it was easier to shoot and more accurate for the average soldier.

Speaking form personal experience I have not had any issues with accuracy using my Plainfield, I found that for a short barreled carbine it was extremely accurate at 100 yards, I found it to be as accurate as my Garand at that range.

If you search Google for M1 Carbine, read the Wikipedia page on it, it should provide you with answers for any other questions you may have about the development, purpose, use, and history of this fantastic little weapon.

Cheers- Iain

Interesting how all of the "historians" and "gun experts" rag on the M1 Carbine all of the time. But at the same time I hear people who actually fought with them and loved them. Sure, you couldn't pick a Nazi off from 400 yards off, but that's not what the gun was meant to do. If you have an M1 and want to get rid of it let me know. If the price is right I'll take it off your hands.

I own and shoot all 4 of the guns mentioned.

1911 - you know it was/is an excellent combat pistol.

M1 Garand - Excellent trigger, great sights, semi-auto and quite accurate

Thompson 1928A1 - Heavy. Lots of power, slow enough that a couple of bursts can be fired and 30 rnd mag is still not empty. Did i say it was heavy?

M1 Carbine. Intended as a replacement for 1911. In most fights, you would rather have the range and accuracy and ease of hitting target with the carbine. Anyone intended to fight would carry the M1 rifle or Thompson. The M2 is a pretty good carbine/SMG. My M1 is quite accurate to 100 yards. Better than any of my SKS, for example.

15 round semi auto carbine against German/Jap 5 round bolt action and you think you are at a disadvantage?

Pietro,

Why are you trying to "second guess" WWII history.....it has come and gone...and that is what it was!

You own a 1928 Tommy? Cool.

Just outta curiosity, where would you be storing this firearm? As well, and again out of simple curiosity, do you believe in lethal force to protect your property?

:D

To put it simply, If I could choose one weapon to go into battle with, the 1911, or the M1 carbine, I would most definitely choose the M1. That's the best way to look at it in my opinion. If it was so crappy, the States wouldn't have used it up into the Vietnam War. And you would carry about 20 lbs of just weapons into combat, still negating the weight of ammo, and all your other gear? Clearly you haven't humped any set of combat gear for any period of time. On a lighter note, I have 2 carbines, and I'm currently looking for an M1A1.

Well............Ive used them and many other WW2 firearms in the same shooting trip.

Compared the M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, K98, Enfield tanker revolver & 1911 of the same time frame.

The gun does exactly what it was designed for and does it beautifully.

Comment on most people couldn't shoot a .45 to save their life... I totally agree.

A shouldered weapon is just FAR easier to aim accurately, just the way firearms are.

.30 Carbine in the shoulder has NO recoil at all.

Having shot a 7 round magazine as fast and accurate as I could (combat shooting you could say) I had a sparse grouping at 50 yards, as where the .30 was ALL within 3 inches.

Given how many variables there are to shooting a pistol and what can throw your aim off......the M1 is a god send in direct comparison, an comparing in the method for which it was designed.

If your shaking wildly with nazi's shooting at you from every angle, that carbine just easier to point.

Carbine is a WIN, the fact you could send 15 rounds out accurately as fast as you can pull the trigger when mostly everyone else has a 3-6 round bolt action....I'd be VERY content to take a .30 into combat.
