I'm looking to pick up another stock for my Remington 870 Express.
Im actually looking for something that's a little shorter. the reason, I'm a bit of a bigger guy (with shorter arms apparently) and I cannot comfortably hold the gun in place (I have to stretch just a bit to get my finger on the trigger the way I want it).\

where is a good place to get these - anyone know which of our sponsors carry them? - save me the time of going through every site

You might see if anyone has a youth model and wants to trade. That will give you a shorter stock......

i believe the 'police' model furniture to be a bit shorter, someone may correct me, a lot of guys take and trim some material off the buttstock also, an inch or 2, and i belive a belt sander might be the way to work a buttpad back to shape after. i have never done it though.

I knew i would take some flak for this. I contemplated if I should even ask..

Apologies offered if my suggestion was taken the wrong way.....I was suggesting this as a serious option. The length of pull on youth models is shorter than the regular stocks. There's always a chance someone has no further need for a youth model but might now feel a regular stock is in order.

If one could avoid cutting a stock, it would save a lot of work ( and damage).

Are you looking for a shorter LOP, or a shoter distances from the grip to the trigger guard? You might want to look at Hogues 12" LOP shotened stocks. Very nice if that is what you're looking for.

Look them up at getgrips.com

LOL! Actually, the suggestion is a good one (and serious) I believe. Suggest handle a youth stocked 870 at a nearby store if you are able to.....a 13inch LOP maybe a better fit than a 12in on Hogue although the later is superior in quality.

thanks Wendell for the sights and all others I will look into the youths sizes (still doesn't seem right does it?!)

my current stock is 13" from end to end. so 12" would be just right. is 12" a youth size?

Wendell, (or anyone) do you know who carries the SPeedfeed stocks? or another good youth model? the stock I have is great - just a touch too long.

LOP is messured from the trigger to the end of the stock (factory LOP is 14"). Speedfeed Choate and others offer 13" LOP, and so (Choate and Hogue offer 12"). All of the companies listed above make quality stuff. Do try and handle samples from friends, gunstores or range buddies if you can. Each stock will have a slightly different feel than another companies.

I recently ordered the Hogue 12" LOP stock from Brownell's and I have to say it's excellent in feel and handling, probably the best thing going in short conventional stocks. My only knock against it is that the recoil pad it came with has a small "footprint" and is not particular soft.

I've got a set of 870 Express furniture that I recently refinished with Walnut stain and tru-oil. You could probably small amounts from the butt until you find a comfortable length then grind the pachmyr recoil pad to fit the new outside dimension.

I would get a wood set and trim it down until it fits you perfectly.
Or just buy a youth set. although i think the grip diameter of the youth models might be a bit narrower.

With regards to Shot guns - what does LOP stand for?

..like I said, I'm new to this

thanks for all the help guys. I will check out the site. I have ordered from Brownwells before - with no problems

LOP = Length Of Pull, the distance from the rear of the stock to the trigger.

Well at least no one suggested a pink girly stock:p

Look on the bright side, your knuckles aren't dragging, you probably don't need your car seat reclined all the way removing the possibility of a passenger behind you. Alwayssss look on the bright side of life, dadump, dadumpty dump-da-dump.:D

Seeing as how you are new to all this, are you sure you really need such a short stock?

When you have the gun shouldered and your hand wrapped around the wrist with your finger on the trigger, how much space is between your thumb and your nose? Get somebody to measure. You should have 2-3 finger widths space.

If you use a stock that is too short, you WILL bash your nose with your thumb under recoil and it WILL hurt like hell.

well, from what I gather (and to address Mauser Mikes point). I think an adjustable stock would be best. from what I gather 14" is standard correct? thus, I have found some from Brownwells and a few others which adjust between 13" 13.5" and 14" - which I think would allow me he versatility that I (think) I require at this time
