Ok.
So . im looking for some advice on a shotgun purchase.

I don’t have much understanding when It comes to shotguns so excuse my ignorance.

Trying to plan ahead this year and would like to have things ready before waterfowl season actually starts.

Im looking for a waterfowling shotgun in 12 gage.
I have a mossberg 535 pump which I usually use but I would like to have better fallow up so im leaning towards an autoloader.

I usually goose hunt and use the 3.5 inch shells. I don’t feel the recoil as much because I get an adrenaline rush when im shooting them.
Its mostly when I try to pattern at the range I feel the wallop of the 3.5 but never had a problem with it in the field.

I was told the beretta xtrema is considered to be one of the top of the line.
If so can someone explain to me why?

What are some other models I should be considering?

From looking around on the web I found that some autoloaders tend to have cycling problem with the smaller shells or lighter loads.
Can someone tell me which models I should avoid?

I understand the concept of “you get what you pay for” and that a good shotgun doesn’t always come cheap but I would like to understand what exactly I am paying for first.

Thanks.

Buy a used Browning Auto 5....one of the great shotguns....not made anymore because of cost of production.........

And the forearms always split.

I have owned a Browning Gold, Remington 1100, Beretta Extrema, Remington 11-87 and my current gun and by far my favourite, is the Baikal MP-153 (followed by the Gold)

The Baikal is inexpensive, tough as nails, needs less maintenance and they just fit me better,
The Beretta is a GREAT gun, low maintenance and will cycle almost anything, but more than twice the price of the Baikal, also are difficult to custom fit as the stock cannot always but cut to the right length. The other two mentioned, need a little more cleaning and care but function just fine.

if you already have a mossberg 535 in my opinion the next logical step is a mossberg 935 the only con so far as i can see is that supposedly it wont shoot 2-3/4 shells but there are guys on here that have them as well and shoot them just fine. i havent tried it with the light shells but it works awesome with the 3.5 ers and the backbored barrel make a tight uniform pattern. but there are lots of opinions out there so ultimately you decide on the pricepoint and hence the modle of firearm you end up with

I know there are a lot of Auto 5 fans out there but seriously I have witnessed more problems with jams, fail to eject, and stock breaks with those guns than any others. I wouldnt EVER buy one.
I have an Extrema. It was expensive compared to other guns like Remingtons or Mossbergs but it just not in the same league. It is a very well engineered, soft shooting, reliable and versitile auto loader. Try one...it may not fit you, if it doesn't, try a Benelli SBE. Spend the money and never look back.

X2. I never liked the Auto 5. It was an engineering breakthrough a century ago but it's day is long over.

As for the original question, if I wanted a 3.5" gun that would also shoot light loads the Beretta Xtrema would be my first choice. The gas-operated action will also reduce the felt recoil.

For the money i think I'd take a look at the MP-153 or whatever, they actually feel pretty solid, 3 1/2" and choke tubes, don't know how they will stand up, long term.

The only problem with many of the 3.5 guns that are on the less expensive side is they don't like light shells at all. Many of them want a 3 dram or hotter shell to even cycle. The higher end guns will cycle down to 1 oz shells without you having to worry if you have a single-shot auto in your hands when at the range.

i got the xtrema at the show, got it for a nice price, by the way , just wanted to make sure, i see on the barrel its marked for 3.5 inch shells, would it be ok to fire 2 3/4 through it as well?
its not listed on the barrel and i cant find anything in the manual for it, just wanting to make sure.
