Just read the new shooting times article on that gun. I just bought my first pistol, and now I want something like this for my second handgun.

I haven't reasearch whellgun that much but I want it in .357/38, nicely blued, classic lines, DA, 5-6 inches bbl.. you know something with attention to detail and with class. Other suggestions ?

Who will have those (new model 27 ) in Canada and when ?

There's lots of very nicely kept used options around as well. I wouldn't pass up on this option unless you're adamant about buying new.

I would also not turn my back on a nice condition used model 19 or a model 28 either. They are both fantastic shooting pieces. I know because I've got one of each and I'm enjoying them both greatly.

If you plan on shooting mostly .357 Mag then I'd suggest your original 27 or a 28. If you'll be shooting mostly .38Spl with a couple of cylinders of .357 Mag here and there then a model 19 may work better for you.

Mind you I may well be biased since I've got both a M19 and a M28 and love them both :D

The last time out I played a sort of Range Russian Roulette where I loaded one round of .357 and 5 of .38Spl. Then I give the cylinder a spin and then stop it and latch it into place. Sure does show you if you have any signs of an anticipatory flinch.... :D
 
model 27

the model 27 smith is a beautiful revolver . the model 28 is;nt as nicely finished but is a nice revolver also . I was going to buy a 27 off a former buddy who backed out of the deal . some freinds talked me into buying a ruger gp100 and it;s built like a tank but needs a trigger job . it;s in stainless . I wish I had purchased a model 28 as the workmanship on the older revolvers is much nicer than the new ones . don;t get talked into paying through the nose for the 27 or the 28 . wait till you find someone that has a nice one for no more than $600 bucks . I don;t have large hands but I have found the model 27 and 28 revolvers point nice and balance better than my Ruger . make sure everything is nice and tight on the revolver before you buy it too . good shooting .

yes I have a model 28 Highway Patrolman, which is almost the same as the M27 with a 6" barrel except the M28 were not as nicely finished, economy model.
They come up on the EE often enough but I've been too cheap to buy another.
 
I had a S serial numbered Model 28 that shot extremely well. I sold it when I got my hands on a N serial numbered Model 27. The 27 I have is an extremely gorgeous revolver with fantastic bluing, target hammer and trigger. The checkered top strap makes me smile every time I look at it but I'll admit that, in hindsight, I wish I didn't sell the 28. I agree that the older 27's and 28's would be preferable than the new ones but I don't think you'll do yourself any injustice if you went the new route.
 
I have 5 N frames in 38 or 357. One 38-44 HD, an Outdoorsman, a 4" 28, a 3.5" S lettered pre 27 and a 5" 27. Also have two model 19 revolvers, a 2.5" and a 4". All good guns. The N frames (particularly the older ones) have much nicer actions, but a lot will depend on the size of your hands and how much heavy 357 shooting you actually plan to do. If you have smaller hands, and plan to use heavy loads, you would probably be better off with an L frame, which has K frame sized grips but a larger (and stronger) frame, modeled after the Colt Python. You guys are losing me with all those frame designation L,K,N,X and numbers 27,28,29. I will have to find something to school me about those S&W revolvers.

Had a 27-2 when I first got into handguns and within a few months got pistol fever and swapped it for a norinco 1911 (hey with a few extras) :redface: ....yes I wish someone had given me a kick to the n*ts to smarten me up but such is life I guess.
Been many pistols and a few revolvers come and gone since but I still have a S&W 586 that seems to stay in my posession (unless someone has a nice norc woodsman clone to swap for it :D)

J-Frame . . small frame revolver
K-Frame . . medium frame
L-Frame . . beefed up K-Frame but only a few ounces lighter than N-Frame
N-Frame . . heavy frame revolver

If your hands are small and the N-Frame is your desire, use magna stocks instead of targets. Or, if you don't mind the loss of appearance , you might find Houges will work.

Last time I was in Wholesale Sports here in Calgary, they had a brand new Model 27 in the handgun display case.

With a 6" barrel, the L-Frame 586/686s weigh about the same as an N-Frame Model 27/28. This is because the L-Frame guns have a heavy lugged barrel, whereas the N-Frame guns have a tapered barrel. Personally, I prefer the looks and balance of the traditional barrel contours without the full underlug.

If you find a Model 27 with a 5" barrel, jump on it! Nothing looks more perfectly proportioned to my eye than a 5" barrel N-Frame.

If standard S&W target grips are not to your liking, Herrett's makes custom grips based on a tracing of your hand. I have a pair of the Roper style on my K-38 Masterpiece and they look and feel excellent. Ahrends also makes retro styled grips that are slimmer than the factory grips, but have a similar appearance.
 
If your looking for a pair Harretts, I have a new pair for a K-Frame, skip-line checkering and a pair for an N-Frame, thumb-rest targets, excellent condition.

This topic NEEDS pics of both 3.5 in & 5 in S&W 357 Magnums....These are, along with the 4 in. Mdl 27 variation, about the hardest to come by !! So we at least need pics !!

I feel your pain and confusion. I'm a new shootist and even newer to the revolver clan. I've found that just entering "smith wesson model ##" without the quotes in my google toolbar delivers pretty much instant photos and some sort of write up all within the first few results. Try it, you'll like it.

I want a perfectly blued new S&W .357 or .44 revolver !

Plz help me...is it gonna stop ?

I repeat my question who as one in stock : model 27 or 29 ?

Yeah, I have to figure out the pic thing. I used to have an account at hunt something, but I've forgotten all the details. I also have 44 Specials and a plethora of N frame mags, 41's and 44's, plus a few 45's that I should take pics of. - dan

OK, hopefully this works. What you should be seeing is 4 S&W N frame 38/357's. First one in the solo pics is a 3.5" pre 27 S model, second is a 4" Model 28, third one is a 6.5" Outdoorsman, fourth one is a 5" Model 27. I also have a 4" HD 38-44 N frame, but it buried in the safe somewhere at the moment. - dan

As long as Dan is raising the bar on tortureing you with pictures here's my own family of S&W goodness.

The Pachmayr gripped Model 19 (K frame 6 inch barrel) arrived in almost like new condition and shoots wonderfully. I recently added a Wolff spring kit and the SA trigger action became so delightfully light that I had a couple of premature shots while aiming. However the FEEL of the SA is now so sweet it's enough to make me drool. And it's like the trigger doesn't even move. I just apply pressure at at some point with no perceptable trigger movement the gun goes BANG! The DA could use a bit more work since even the lightest spring in the kit that I then cut off about two coils is still pretty stiff.

The wood gripped Model 38 Highway Patrolman (N frame 5 inch barrel) is also a delight. In this case the gun had been shot a lot before me but rather than complain and take it back to the store I've decided to keep it and fix or get it fixed, depending on what I'm comfortable with, so that it can be brought up to spec. Still, even with a bit of cylinder looseness it's a tack driver with groups that are equally as tight as the 19, which is to say that I can shoot either of these tighter with less effort than I can shoot my semis. My concern for my M28 is purely aimed at restoring the tolerances to help ensure it continues to live on without doing itself any further damage.

Oh, and the fact that the 28 is the same gun, other than the bore, as Harry Callahan's .44 Magnum doesn't hurt either.... :D

When I first started shooting it was all about the semis. The revolvers just looked odd. Then in a week moment I thought I'd try one of the revolvers just for something different. Well..... half way through my second cylinder of .38Spl's shooting with a Model 19 I was totally hooked and amazed. Revolvers have a totally different feel to them that is just so different. And with tuning to smoothen and lighten the DA pull they can almost approach a semi for rate of ACCURATE fire.

Er.... all this isn't helping your fever at all is it..... :D
