I'm looking for a gunsmith to build a rifle with a Martini falling block action. I can be patient and I don't want it fancy, just a good serviceable hunting rifle. If I can afford it. (And the closer to Saskatoon, the better.)

If you know someone that you think suitable for this project, please post or pm. Thanks.

I don't know if Craig Douglas of Saskatoon would take it on as I think he prefers working on bolt guns, esp. 700s, but I can't speak for him, he does know his stuff. The other recommendation is Peter Dingle in Ontario, Pete is an ex-englishman, and outstanding machinist, and gunsmith and has a good knowledge of Martinis and single-shots in general. Shipping to Ont. wouldn't cost too much in the grand scheme of things.

I do know if Craig Douglas would take it on: He wouldn't. He says he hasn't worked on a Martini action. I wish he would but I think it's a good thing that a guy will turn down work he doesn't think he will do it as well as he thinks it should be done. (He's the first guy I call because he has done a couple of little jobs for me and his price was fair and service good and people whose opinions I trust speak well of him.)

I will look up Pete Dingle. Thanks.

i have a job coming up in the future, i have talked to craige before and he seems to know his stuff, but i havent seen his work? what about the other guy in saskatoon cant remember his name though?

You got that right. If you like shooting the breeze about firearms and the latest thing out there, he was really interesting. Great stories from his days in the USMC as well!:)

I think Dugan may be the name you can't remember. I never dealt with him but heard he was an excellent gunsmith and failed anyway. There is Kerry Higgins still operating at Saskatoon Gunsmith Shoppe. I've never heard him described as less than competent. I can't comment on the abilities of the fellow at Saskatoon Gunworks because he always comes across to me as miserable and unhelpful so I've never taken any work to him. Craig Douglas is, as I said, the first guy I call on, but if he wasn't available I wouldn't hesitate to offer work to K. Higgins.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. More than one has seemed to me to be suitable, and I have found one of them seems to be more suitable than the others so I am trying to go ahead with the project.

The deal on the action is done, so I'm shopping for a barrel. So far it seems a Montana barrel can be had that is suitable at a price I will be able to afford. Anyone know any reason to avoid them or have any better ideas? (I don't care for stainless and/or fluting.)
