Winnipeg Hungry M14 Clinic Sat 04 Apr 2009 Debrief Here!

Yep everything is coming to gether well, many thanks to Fire for getting the vice etc together.

If someone can operate it I think I can get us a gas mig. If nobody can operate it but enough people want it done I may be able to get a guy to come down with equipment to do the welding, I think $10 a rifle if fair. If enough people can commit in the next couple days I'll try to get it together for the weekend. If not then we'll have to pass on the welding. Hungry if you can think of anything else that would be good to have here just PM me and I'll try to get it together.

Hmmmmm...

Okay, Anybody here need their rifle bedded ? I'm just wondering whether I should bring along some JB Weld? Or my jar of Devcon, I normally bring it just to show people what all the fuss (Devcon for $ 90 a jar) is all about.

I'm packing my high technology Aerospace Grade Stainless steel parallels for any indexing/rebarreling jobs.

I'm also brining my vise jaw blocks, unless Suprathepeg advises me NOT to carry them heavy bastages along....

Thoughts?

I think at least a quick discussion on betting the M14 would be great. If someone has a stock they want to have bedded then all the better.

Yea you should bring hte jaw blocks, we can talk about it over liquer when you get here.

I've been pondering the welding aspect. I can easily bring a 220 v mig welder, but by most accounts, mig welding chromoly isn't ideal. I'm basing the chromoly specs on the sticky in this forum. You generally want to preheat the parts to slow down the cooling rate and prevent excessive hardening or cracking of the weld. Especially with mig, as the fast welding of mig involves little to no preheat. I have tig welding capability, but my equipment weighs in order of 600 lbs and is not therefore portable. I'd like to hear from Hungry how important he sees the improvement that unitizing the gas system makes. As the welds are external, visable and require removing the parkerizing, I'm not that keen on the idea unless it is really important to accuracy. Also, do the welders he's used, preheat the gas system, even for tig?

Well my M14 sold quickly, but I still have the ammo and once fired (80 piece) brass.

Picture001-2.jpg

$30 for the ammo
$15 for the brass

I'll bring it up the the clinic is anyone is interested...

Hey, do you guys shoot your Norinco's or just tinker with them ;).

Ammo still up for grabs. Certainly someone must want to crank off a few rounds after tuning their M14s/305???

Suprapeg: Holy granola  I was just touching base with the Weather Channel. Wow... it's still winter in Winterpeg! :D

So... who is picking me up at the airport ? All the tools are piled up ready for loading into the travel bag for the Friday night flight. I'm getting excited...

Barney

Fire and I should be able to pick you up. We'll be dropping some stuff off at the club and then go get you.

Whats the consensus on the welder?

Okay, we gotta clear up this issue with the welder that may or may not show up.

Do we have a welder and someone who can do such welding spot welds on the gas cylinders ? We were lucky at the Edmonton and Barrie GC clinics with welding gear.

If we cannot clarify this issue, it's simple: we can't do any welding and sometimes, that is not our worst problem! We'll still carry on with the clinic and knowledge passing! That's really what is important! :D

We are only a couple of days away. I'm flying in on Friday evening!

What sort of power if available? 220v? And do you know what style plug? Stove plug? If so, I might be able to put together an adapter cable. I just tigged my gas cylinder and I'm going to try preheating and mig another to see how that turns out. I'll bring the mig if there is 220 power I can plug into, and if I'm happy with the results on my 2nd gas cylinder. I have a spare barrel that I used to position the parts on and do the welding to make sure it was all aligned properly.

Yeah we should hit Hooters after the clinic.

Grizz what type of plug do you need for your Welder.

Supra and I will meet you at the airport Hungry. Looking forward to Saturday.

I was hoping it would be nice but at the rate things are going the range will still be covered in snow.

Coffee will be provided by the game & fish hg club.

There is a stove in the clubhouse, I would bet there's a plug for it.

Grizz what type of plug do you need for your Welder.

It's three pronged, two hots and a ground. It's different than stove or dryer plugs. It has two prongs that are flat and parallel to each other. One prong is wider than the other. I used to have a short adapter I made up so that I could use a stove plug, which of course is different for some reason. But keep in mind, not all stoves have plugs. Its code for one installed now, but many of the old one's were just hardwired.

Does it say how many amps it requires. It sounds like that is a 220 volt 30 amp plug. I will ask if there is a stove plug onsite if not i should be able to wire up as 30 amp plug for it. I guess we need to decide today if we want to have you lug it out to the clinic.

The welder I'd bring draws 20 amps at 220v. The plug style is I believe designed for 50 amp service. The 30 amp plugs have the pins oriented like this

The 50 amp plug (or so I believe) on welder's is typically like this:

An option is for me to grab a stove plug and put a welder's 50 amp female recepticle on it, then it can be plugged into a stove outlet. But that assumes the stove has an outlet plug.

I'm packing right now. I'm just thankful that you guys know what the heck (the welder) you'rd doing because I'm outta my league on this electronic stuff.

So it's winter there is it? I'm ready for it. I have not put my winter gear away, yet!

Darn.... I can't pack certain things like:

* Dewey 24" cleaning rod for the M14 / M1 Garand
* Large screwdriver set (heavy)
* Vise jaw blocks for NM profile (super fat and heavy), but I'm bringing along my Norc barrel profile jaw blocks (sound good, Suprapeg?) for GI profiled (including Norc) barrels
* Acetone (Suprapeg is bringing this along)
* Dremel tool set for any of you guys

Now I'm packing my personal kit!

Yea currently it is -25 with a harsh north wind. Bring your parka.

JK, so far it is supposed to keep around the freezing level.

I welded / unitized my other M14's gas system this evening. Preheated the parts with a propane torch, then gave them a quick spot weld. Turned out quite nice in my opinion. A nice little button of a weld at 10 and 2 on the barrel band. However on both I did, the gas assembly becomes tighter on the barrel after unitizing, and it takes some tapping with a hammer to slid it on and off, instead of just falling off like it did before. I believe this is due to some slight distortion of the barrel band. Probably not a bad thing. No harm done to the gas cylinder, the piston still slides as smoothly as ever.

What time do we get started on Sat am? Edit: OK 9:00 am
