Well I finally did it, I broke down and bought a Remington! I've been a Sako guy for a long long time, but decided that at 1/2 the price of a 22-250 Sako 85 Varmint I'd try the one Remington that does give me a bit of a chubby! The VSF Desert Tan Blued Fluted Varmint. I have yet to shoot it, I hope it shoots well! The factory trigger setting sucked! But after setting it down it seems ok. Feels a lot different than my Sako though. It will take some getting used to. All and all the rifle fits and feels nice. I figure if it doesn't shoot well I have a good starting point for a custom with the action and the stock. Are all Remington barrels dirty from the factory? Man this thing seemed bad. That packing tar (I call it!) seemed to be just crammed inside this barrel! I worked at it though and she is nice and clean now and ready for her virgin trip to the range! If it don't shoot I have a sweet Sako 75 blued wood sporter in 223 I just picked up too! Should be a fun weekend!

Good buy.
That HS stock was only available on the VSF Remington. I understand that it's the same except for colour as the stock on the 5R and VSSF II. I just bought one that was a take off from a VSF and will be putting my second 5R into it.
That Tan/black sure is nice looking. Also it's a nice change from having all Green/black stocked rifles. It seems they are no longer making this model so the Tan HS stock combo will be even rarer in the future. Sharp looking rifle.

168 grain Federal Match should shoot about .5 moa or less in that rifle. Let us know how it shoots.
 
Ahhh, the VSF - a man after my own heart. Had I decided to go the Remington + Leupold route, this is exactly what I'd go for. So many features that I like (aluminum bedding, fluted barrel) for such a decent price; I like two-piece bases too for that old-school look - what kind are they? And the bases?

A range report is due!

Leupold bases & rings. May go the Talley route later as the rest of my rifles have them. Have to wait to see how she shoots though. Pictures are easy to take when you have a studio in your basement!
 
Any 700 is good.:D

Just curious how you take such nice pictures?
I usually take 20 pics or so with different lighting to get one that looks half decent.:redface:

I say keep it as it is - like I said, the old-school look of the mount has a bit of a charm to it. Being a target shooter, I would have personally gone for a higher-power scope, but I don't know the distances/types of shooting you will do - maybe 3.5-10x (which I'm guessing is the power) was a good compromise between magnification & field-of-view for you.

The reticule is FFP on that one, am I right?

It's a clone MD reticule, it's all I had kicking around at home right now. Will go higher power eventually after I have more $ in the piggy bank! One thing at a time I guess :-(

the last 2 are presets in Photoshop Lightroom. It is just a cool little effect to make a picture POP!!! I do pro work on the side and have all the equipment in my aresonal!!

I figured it was mil-dot (if a scope doesn't have a mil-dot, your rifle can't hit a barn from 50 yds), but by FFP I mean in the 1st focal plane... Does the reticule get bigger/smaller as you change magnification? If so it is, and I think your model has that...

I knew someone would comment on that! I personnally like my scope back as far as possible! With the mount facing back you can get the scope back just a little bit more than when it's forward. It's not much, but every bit helps! When I have the power turned up on the scope and shoulder my rifle, I can pick the sight picture up instantly when my scope is farther back! If the scope is ahead too much I have to move my head forward a bit which is not natural for me! So that is why the mount is reversed on this rifle!

I actually don't mind the look of it being that far back, but I would suggest that if you like less eye relief that you flip the rear base around because your rings are close to each other. If you knock your scope or something, greater torque will be exerted and you would cause more damage than if the rings were farther apart. Since you haven't shot it yet, I'd flip the rear base ASAP so you don't have to redo the sight-in.
