I just bought a .22 Short mousegun (Astra 2000? Cub?).

I haven't got much experience with .22 short ammo. I realize that rapid fire .22 short used to be used in competition but that it was recently phased out.

What brands are available? Does it come in standard and high velocity? Are prices a lot higher than .22 LR? Can I buy it in 500 round packs? Can I get CB shorts?

Can the Astra shoot all types of .22 short safely?

Thanks for any insight.

I am by NO means an expert as short ammo was went out of common use before I was born. CCI is the only manufacturer that I have seen consistantly sitting on the shelf. I think they are in 100 round sleeves. I couldn't quote you a price, however I did pick up some CCI Longs a couple years back for my dads CIL .22. They were pricier than the stingers and such, so I imagine shorts are up there in price as well.

I have an old Winchester pump chambered for 22 short, and a rapid fire pistol in 22 short. I bought ammo a few months ago and was shocked to discover it costs more than 22 LR.

I got Aguila stnd velocity. Winchester and CCI also make it.

The 22 short is not a common offering any more. You can buy the match ammo from Eley [22 Short Rapid-Fire Match] at about $85.00/brick, or RWS [R25 Match] at about $80.00/brick. [Be aware that even these sources may dry up before too long] This is about the same price as decent 22LR Match ammo. Regards, Eagleye.

I bought 2 boxes of 100 .22 short CCI CBs @ Canadian tire for 9.95 a box. the high velocity shorts were about 7 for 100. I like shorts in my Cooey because it will hold 20 in the tube mag. the cbs wont cycle semis autos though. have fun with your new toy!

Picked up a variety of CCI shorts at Bass Pro in Calgary last week. Regular solid bullets, hollow points and CB's. They were all $9.95/100 rounds. I cleaned out the rack, so they may not have any today.

The CBs out of a rifle are quieter than a pellet gun, no twang of s spring. a cap gun is louder than CBs. Agreed, in a pistol they are much louder.

just to clarify...... can you or can you not shoot .22 short out of a rifle chambered for .22lr???

yes,no problem.there are many guns that will feed short, long and l.r. mixed in the tube(i say tube 'cause that's the only way i believe they can reliably feed.)
a semi won't feed shorts unless you manually place each round in the chamber--hope you got small fingers:)

CCI CB's are incredibly quiet...especially fired from 22's with longer barrels. Dropped many crows with these. 10 bucks/100 at C.T.

Absolutely, these CBs are a really good choice for noise. I use them all the time. They shoot better in some guns then others.

Also these are VERY loud out of a pistol. Easily that of a Subsonic LR closer to a High-vel.

Incidentally in my friends Savage single shot with a 26" barrel a Subsonic LR is as quiet as a CB short is out of a 18" rifle like my Henry.

Not in a pistol!!

Even out of my 6.5" Single six, .22 short makes one heck of a crack, at least as loud as a .22 High-vel out of a rifle.
:agree: My 4 5/8" Single Six surprised the heck out of me how load it was the first time I popped off a cylinder fulla of CCI shorts.
