Does anyone here use Cheddite primers for reloading skeet and trap rounds? I'm thinking of switching to them in order to keep costs down a bit. Every once in awhile they get bad press on other sites. One concern I've read is pierced primers with potential firing pin erosion. There may be others. On the other hand, I know two guys here that have used them routinely for a number of years and they report no problems.

Shot thousands of them both as components and in loaded ammunition. Kent and Challenger use Cheddite components and they may well be used in other factory ammo. No problems with performance or with firing pins.

just picked up 2000 from hummasons , 32 dollars per 1000 versus other brands $50+ per 1000, you have to save as much money as you can when reloading , so far so good

Think I'll go ahead and buy 5K for a tryout. Thinking of shifting to Promo powder too. The last time around on a bulk buy the primers (W209) and powder (Clays) were getting way up there. Thanks for the comments. Fred

I have used about 15000 and never had a problem. If I am loading 1 oz loads in a AA case I prefer 700X over Promo so if it is cheaper then I would buy the 700X

Didn't realize that 700X could be cheaper than Promo. Promo is often mentioned as an inexpensive powder. I'll be sure to compare the price of each before buying. I like 700X but do find it to be a little dirtier than Clays, Titewad or Red Dot. Still, I can live with that. Fred

I used some by mistake in my K-80. in 12 ga. I got many burn throughs which caused pitting of the firing pins. During it's annual overhaul the gunsmith for K-80 in PA indicated it was from these primers. No pitting on my 11-87 though, most likely due to the fact the hammer recoils back off the firing pin.

another "thumbs up" for Cheddites.

FYI.....since I couldn't find any loading data for them I contacted Cheddite directly. They came back and said if using as a replacement for the Win 209's.....reduce the powder charge 1/2 grain. Been doing that for the past 4-5 years in all 4 skeet gauges and all has been good with them for me.

The only negative that I keep hearting about cheddite primers is that once you use them they expand the hull a bit so that win 209s will be loose in the same hull? I don't know if that is true, but who cares? And why would one want to use win after using the cheaper cheddite?

That is my experience. The Cheddites are slightly larger. They are a bit hard to seat on the first loading and if you go back to Winchester they may be loose.

I found that when i loaded 11/8 with 19gr of promo powder using a cheddite primer it left unburned powder in the receiver action of the Beretta 391 auto. I also found this to be more common in the colder weather. When i load a 1 oz. load with 18 gr of promo powder i donot have this problem even in the cold weather. To solve my problem i use Federal 209A primer in all my 11/8 loads and cheddite primers in the lighter loads. Perhaps this does not happen with pumps or o/u. Any comments ?

About a year and a half ago. They mat have changed since then, but I'm not brave enough to use them in my K80. However the gun worked fine with the pitted firing pins, but you know how K80 owners are!!!!
