M&P 9 vs M&P .40 Thread

Hey guys,

As you all can probably tell by now I can never make up my mind on my own. Looking for some thoughts on each. I'm looking at getting one but I'm unsure of which to get.

Here's what you need to do:

Step 1 - buy an M&P40 (and a bunch of mags for it);

Step 2 - buy an M&P9 barrel (and a bunch of mags to go with it)(and if you want to spend a TON of money on ammo a M&P .357 SIG barrel - use the .40 mags with this one);

Step 3 - shoot whichever caliber you feel like (or what ever you have ammo for at the moment);

Step 4 - remember to always check before you step up to the line at the IPSC/IDPA match that you do not have a 9mm barrel in when you are attempting to load with.40 mags and ammo :eek: - I'm just sayin'...

.40 is more fun to shoot (imo) but 9mm is cheaper. If you reload or are planning to reload go with .40 otherwise go with 9mm (assuming you don't have another 9mm pistol and you want to be able to shoot a lot).
 
Last time I shot 9mm and .40 cal back to back I noticed the paper screamed a little louder and bled a little more with the .40 cal :)

My vote goes to 9mm, especially if you shoot a lot. The savings may not be a whole lot but every little bit adds up.
 
You cannot convert to 9mm by just changing the barrels. You would have to get a 9mm conversion barrel from storm lake or another manufacturer. The .40 barrel is slightly larger at the chanber end than the 9mm barrel. Go to mp-pistol.com and ask q's there.

PS the reason i went with the .40 and not the 9mm was i am relodaing and i came into over 1000 .40 brass and i didn't even have a .40 yet. LOL
 
I've shot them both. The .40 is snappier. What are you going to use it for?

The 9MM wins hands down if you are looking at IDPA SSP/ESP Divisions or IPSC Production. Less expensive, less recoil and the paper targets die just as quick. IF you reload the 9MM is still cheaper.

Umm - yes you can.

I'm not sure where this is coming from, but I guess the 5000 rounds of 9mm that I've fired out of my 2 M&P40's was just my imagination. I have a factory M&P9 barrel and it is dimensionally identical to the .40 barrels (externally). If you look at the factory parts list for the 9 & 40 (and .357) you will see that the only parts difference is the barrel and the magazine - same ejector, extractor, recoil spring assembly, striker assembly - the works.

There's a reason why it's referred to as the "ErrorNet"...

PS - I have a 55 gal barrel in my back shed about half full of .40 brass. How much is that???

So tell me more about this barrel conversion thing. How much is a barrel and mags for these guns? Are they easy to get?

What about a 45 barrel does it work on the same frame as well?
 
I checked this out a little while ago, mp-store.com, or was it midway?.... has 9mm conversion kits for $350ish usd.... that includes a Slide (complete), Barrel, and 2 mags. So all you would have to do to switch from .40 to 9mm is pull your slide off and pop on the other...... Of course they won't ship it up here, but they are out there.

As stated earier, all you have to have is a 9mm barrel and swap it out with the .40 barrel and you are booming....... you would still need mags tho.

You can alter the lips of your .40 mags to feed 9mm..... but due to the increased capacity (I think about 13 rnds as opposed to 10) that would be considered "manufacturing a prohibited device".

.40 to 9mm conversions is do-able. I did the math, and for about the same money (or maybe a little more) you can get into a used pistol. I've seen used M&P's for around $500. So if I was to consider buying a "caliber conversion" for my M&P...... I'd prolly just wind up buying a used pistol.

Oh and back to the original thread........ Buy the one you want more..... Buy the other one later! I bought a M&P9 after I shoot a buddies M&P.40. I also shot 3 different glocks, a CZ, a beretta, and a coulpe of revolvers. I went with the M&P. The reason I bought the 9mm as opposed to the .40 is 9mm is cheaper to shoot. If I was buying for personal protection or CCW I'd a probably got the .40..... The price is after all the same. Just my opinion again.

If this helps at all I have been told 9mm is more accurate than .40. No first hand knowledge on that one, just what I was told.
