5" 1911 or Commander?

I will be purchasing a Norc 1911 in the next while. I have a line on a lightly used Commander or I can buy a brand new 5" Police model from Canada Ammo. Price is within a few bucks either way. Any reason to pick one over the other at this point? I expect I will have both at some point, but not immediately. I don't think there are any commanders available commercially at this time, but that Marstar is supposed to be getting some in this summer.

Which should I pick?

Thanks,
Mark

Have you held both sizes? I found after handling both that the Commander fit me a lot better, but that just me. For me the shorter barrel handled the best. I also find the Commander to look a little ###ier as well.

I personally bought a nork commander first and didn't like the feel of it. I sold it shortly after and ordered a blued nork police model same as what your thinking. I think the extra barrel length will help.

Ellwood Epps has like 10 Norinco Commanders and they have been in stock for ages. Not sure if they are the newer ones, but still available nonetheless.

Get both.

I know that is the correct answer, but I can only justify money for one at the moment. I will probably be able to get the other by the end of summer, but I need to prioritize for the moment. I was basically wondering if the lack of availablility of the Commander was enough to make a used one worth the same price as the NIB Police model at Canada Ammo.

Seeing as how they are not as unavailable as I thought, I think the Police model first will be the way I go. At worst I can sell it for a small loss if I find it a terrible match for me. I will be having Gunnar do his Norc tuneup on both guns, so it should be a great pair of a classic design when I have both.

Thanks,
Mark

Since the "get both" has been addressed.... my second choice would be go for the full size 'government' model over the 'commander'.... ;)

Probably can't go wrong with the Can-Am one. I got the all blued model & am happy with the choice.

It's a matter of taste, i find the Commander just perfect, but if someone gave me a Government model I would be happy. I wanted one of the Bul double stacked officer frame with commander slide.

NAA, your pics of the all blued on is what convinced me to get one. I was leaning towards the two tone, but yours looked so good with the wood grips that I changed my mind.

I chose the all blued one after I saw/handled a two tone at a local gun show when they first became available. The two tone just doesn't do it for me. And I knew a nice set of double diamond hardwoods would really hilight the all blued one. Plus, those grips fit my hand best for shooting which is the practical consideration as well.

hi, Colin, I'm thinking of getting one of those BUL 1911's, but I've never handled it, is the grip very large since it's double stacked? thanks.

It's not for small hands, but it's not bad either. I have shot the Bul government model and fondled the Officers, they fit my hand nicely which is a medium large glove size

.. Having had both, there are pros and cons to each. So it really comes down to personal choice and intended use to a lesser extent. The Commander to me looks a little better, being slightly lighter and shorter, it's a shade quicker onto target, but the extra length of the "full sized" 1911 gives an added sight radius, and being a little heavier, particularly at the front, there's, slightly, reduced "felt recoil" and "muzzle flip" in rapid fire. The other advantage, to the full sized version, is the availability of .22 "conversion kits". Currently, the only 1911, I own, is a full sized one , and I've certainly been very happy with it. ( Series 70, 45ACP .... lightly "Customized" ) ..... David K:)

You will always have less issues with a 1911 in the 5" format than any of the shorter versions. In particular the full-size version goes thru springs a bit less aggresively and will exhibit a signifcant lesser number of FTE/FTF. If you get a Commander sized 1911 that works all the time, cherish it...

mmattockx..... If you are going to send it to Gunnar anyway...... Why not just get the new 1911A1 from Gunnar...... it would be cheaper and he has a full 1year warrenty on his as well?

I mean the one from canam is $350 + tax and shipping, then shipping to gunnar, then $100 +tax (for the tune up) and shipping again...... and then no warrenty from Canam.... as the pistol has been worked over?

OR

$449.00 +tax and shipping from Armco & a full 1 year no hassel feed anything warrenty? Then you get a 1911 that is tuned, will feed any ammo & has a 3.5 to 4lb crisp trigger.....

Kind of a no-brainer for me anyway...... I ordered from Gunnar.....

Unless the one at armco is not what you want.... in that case ignore everything I just typed...... :D

Cheers!
