Point Blank Zero to 500 yards

257 STW with high BC 120 gr pills? 7 STW with high BC 160 grainers?

Tall order for sure. I wouldn't want to be the guy that had to deliver such a creature.
 
According to my iPod running the Ballistic app, a .257 Berger 115 VLD driven at 3650 in a standard atmosphere (29.92 Hg, 59F, 78% humidity)and zeroed at 350 yards would be inside a 6" vital zone to 500 yards (2.48" high at 100 and 2.94" low at 500).

I read load claims of a guy ( http://www.handloadersbench.com/forum91/6417.html )that says 90 grains of Retumbo under a 100 TSX gives 3900 in his rifle. According to the numbers that would accomplish the 6" point blank to 500 with aplomb.

Like I said though...tall order.
 
Unless seconds count and you don't have time to range the animal because the animal isn't standing around waiting to be shot in which case get a flat shooting rifle/cartridge combo that will always get the job done instead of might get it done...
 
a 7mm-378wby, loaded dangerously hot, shooting a fictional .600 BC 160 grain bullet at 4000fps from a 48" barrel still only gets you to 400 yards for a 6" killzone (+/-3").

To get to 500, you'd need a 12" killzone (+/- 6")

a rushed long range shot at a moving animal is probably not a good idea in most situations for most shooters. I dont like to use the word always when talking about LR shooting because there are way too many variables to consider. Assumptions about where your bullet will land, will most likely result in some broken legs or wind drift gut shots. Just my .02$ :)

Ive seen what a cartridge with a MV of 2600 fps can do at 600 yards when you know the range and know the drop.

regardless, flat trajectory is highly overrated IMO :) because even the flat shooters drop past 300 yards and if you don't know the range you will not place the shot accurately unless you have luck on your side and if we're relying on luck to get the job done, I think the other kind of luck will rear its ugly head more often than not! :)
