What do most of you do with unwanted Black bear hides? I will fill 2 tags this year for the meat and don't really need/want the hides for anything. I don't really want to leave them in the bush or take them to the dump. I don't think they are a high demand item for a taxidermist...I could be wrong though. Suggestions please.

Unless its for personal use they arent worth processing to me.(unless you can find a taxidermist that wants a green cape)

To much work for almost no money. Its a lot of work to skin, and flesh a bear. Plus turning the lips and ears.............for maybe $100 if it sells.

We only have a fall hunt in Ontario and the hides are much better in the spring.

I always ask around my non bear hunting friends to see if anyone wants a bear rug made. Usually someone wants it for a rec room, hunt camp etc. I've never had to throw away a hide yet. Normally the problem is the other way around with hunters wanting the hide and throwing out all the meat(I hate that).

I love eating bear meat, makes awesome sausage ham and roasts. I would tan and keep every hide off every animal though if I had the storage, time and $$ to get it done. Just finding time to get out and hunt this year is already a major problem, sadly. I will ask around but most of my friends already hunt bears. I do have a trapper buddy here...buts hes so bloody lazy about it...he didn't even want any yotes I could bring him. Maybe I'll stick an ad in the paper.

They make a brillo pad feel soft. Little value, lots of work.

The silky saskatchewan ones are nice though. Your BC ones are supposed to be pretty nice but I havent seen one myself.

lol ah I see. They are nice here...big too. Lots of color in them...like they bred with dogs at some point.

I do what my buddy does... :D

Turf it out into the thickest bush and wait for some moron to contact the media so they can start another ill informed media blitz squacking about it being a poached animal with it's paws and gall bladder being removed.

That is until they have to write a retraction stating that it was a legally killed and legally disposed of bear carcass and the the paws were still there...

Is it legal in BC just to dump it in the woods? I would think the dump would be the place. I remember some guy in AB getting charged for leaving the hide/carcass in a garbage bag for pick up though. I read the BC regs and it seems to me that in BC once you bring it home, you can do what you want with it. Personally I just hate seeing something going to waste. Maybe I'll just dry em out and tack them to my garage wall.:)

Once you bring the edible portions home you can do whatever you want with it doesn't say anything about the hide or guts.

What do you do with the guts of any animal bring them home or leave them where you shot the animal?

I always gut and in many cases skin the animal before I head home leaving the remains in the bush to feed the local animals remember nothing goes to waste in the bush something is going to eat it...

i leave the hide and guts in the bush. no point in taking it home. most bear hides arn't worth the money as there rubbed or thin. out of may bears i have kept only two. one was a nice moca colour i got two years ago. its on my bedroom floor. the other one this spring was a really nice brown. its in the freezer waiting to go in . it will become a throw rug.

I leave 'em in the bush.

I gut, skin and quarter a bear right on the spot.

I usually hunt from mid to late May and the hides are no good anyway.

There's one I got in 1997 that was just too nice though, so I gave it to a buddy.

I usually do an in between where I quarter the bear with the hide on keep the back straps/tenders in a ziploc, leave the torso and carry the bundle to the truck. I unwrap/cut the rest of the quarters from the hide and butcher it for the freezer asap. I suppose I could just quarter it with the hide and proof of ### attached and chuck the small pieces of hide after.Easy enough.
