Here we go again!
Ministry continues to ignore issue of bear overpopulation

O.F.A.H. MEDIA RELEASE--(Marketwire - May 27, 2009) - This week, another
black bear made its way into the City of Peterborough, marking the start of
another season of black bear/human conflict, not only in the area, but
across the province.

On May 26, a black bear, estimated to be between one and two years old, was
spotted in East City Bowl, a park located close to homes, retail shops and
an elementary school. This time, Ministry of Natural Resources (M.N.R.)
staff were able to tranquilize and relocate the animal, but the continual
rise in bear/human occurrences is a concern to the Ontario Federation of
Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.).

"This is yet another example of black bears coming into contact with humans,
a potentially dangerous occurrence for both Peterborough residents and the
bear itself," said Terry Quinney, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters
(O.F.A.H.) Provincial Manager of Fish and Wildlife Services. "Fortunately,
the bear was contained within the park, otherwise it could have come in
contact with children on their way to school. This is happening all over the
province. When is the government going to acknowledge that Ontario has too
many bears for the habitat available and stop claiming that there isn't a
problem?"

Human/bear conflicts have been on the rise since 1999, when the provincial
government suddenly, and without public consultation, bowed to political
pressure and banned the spring bear hunt. The government's unsubstantiated
claim that bear cubs were being orphaned has been widely disputed by
wildlife biologists and managers, including the O.F.A.H. With
ever-increasing numbers of bears being relocated and dispatched over the
past decade, the science clearly demonstrates that more cubs are being
orphaned or shot today in the protection of property, than ever were during
the highly regulated spring hunt.

To date, the M.N.R.'s response to the dangerous escalation in bear/human
conflict has been limited to the Bear Wise program, which is currently under
government review. The program's own statistics reveal there is an upward
trend in bear occurrences resulting in phone or onsite response, up from
8,547 in 2004/5 to an estimated 12,645 in 2007/8. The trend would be
downward or stable if bear populations were being well managed.

"The benefits of bringing back an early season hunt are ecological, social
and economic. An early season hunt would assist in reducing human/bear
conflicts through better population management, provide more outdoor
opportunities for hunters, and help generate economic prosperity for
northern communities that have suffered terribly since the cancellation of
the spring hunt," added Quinney.

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters, and 660 member clubs,
the O.F.A.H. is the largest nonprofit, charitable, fishing, hunting and
conservation-based organization in Ontario, and the voice of anglers and
hunters. For more information, visit www.ofah.org

As much as we know the spring bear hunt cancellation was a political move not a scientific one.
There will never be a spring bear hunt until every one in Toronto looses a family member to a bear.

Since this will never happen, you can say good bye to spring bear hunting for ever.

Votes are the only thing that maters to those #### sucking, politicians.Speaking of which were is our leader Mr I will get the registry abolished.

He is sucking the ass of the majority not us the minority who he coned(spelling error?) into voting for his party.

I will be expecting my infractions in a timely manner,as for Mr blue ball less he can kiss my hairy dark star.

Not sure who will get my next vote but that #### stick and his ass wipe party can go blow bear #### in the far north ,and suck the proverbial tit of the majority.

Thank you! I am Pmsing today, with the equalization of the taxes I will have to use stale bread in the future.

So why doesn't someone in Ontario organize a "Back to Nature" wilderness camping adventure for anti-firearms advocates?

You could take them for an authentic deep woods "Meet the Bears" adventure with lots of food (preferably littering their camp site), wine and cheese and party snacks (sans firearms, of course) and let them have a first hand experience with Ontario's furrier and toothy wildlife.

Since they don't need guns they could enjoy the warmer, playful side of Mother Nature's furry predators first hand.

Based on what I've seen on the Disney Channel (and they're never wrong!), that would be loads of fun and would do wonders in teaching the antis about how harmless bears really are!

The Bears and the Bees

I hadn't even thought about the moose, but I can tell you that my Dad's bee hives have been getting devastated the last few years buy Black Bears.

There are so many of them in comparison to the food available in the spring that they are naturalized to the hive security. They seem to know that the fence is electric, and just sacrifice the body by running full tilt into the wires, then comming back once the 'daze' wears off and climb over whats left.....

It has been so bad the last few years that he has now put up the money for me to get a 45-70 and make no doubt about it when we spot the next one.

Apiarists(beekeepers) are supposed to call the MNR if they are having issues, but all they do is live trap or tranq and then 'relocate', which = drive it North a couple hours and drop them off....All this does is make the bear walk for a few days, so he is extra hungry when he gets back to the bee yard.:jerkit:

But then again, the are just soooo cuddly, who would ever want to hurt on?...:D

Unfortunately the assclown anti-hunting advocates do not understand a damn thing about ecology. They like to call us gun owners rednecks, yet it seems we know more science than they do. When will they realize that allowing the population of any animal to grow unchecked does no good for anyone, including the animals themselves?

If I can find the pics from my trail cam from just last week i'll post them...7 bears at one bait barrel...3 at another and 2 at another. I had a few pails of grease left over from last year and my buddy is a Dempsters delivery guy so I get all his old bread...year round baiting. I can tell ya there is no shortage of bears in my area here in Lanark County. 7 Bears at one bait barrel and 3 at another and 2 more...not the same bears in the pics either as the pics were taken on the same night in the same time frame....my baiting area is about 4 square miles....Yep....there are no bears in Ontario.

The population of any species will equalize it self to the available carrying capacity of there habitat,I does not require hunters to achieve this, nature can do it on its own.

Well, Ontario PC leadership hopeful Randy Hillier has already stated if he wins the leadership and becomes Premier, he will reinstate the spring bear hunt.

Right, but when the carrying capacity of their habitat involves destroying my family's livelyhood, then we do need hunters to achieve this, and as far as I'm concerned, killing those bears and eating them/ feeding them to the dogs and using the fur for products IS NATURAL!

Sorry, but I don't have the patience for bears to eat all the garbage around major cities until they have bred out of control and start to die off on their own.

BRING BACK THE SPRING BEAR HUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hillier is a darkhorse, but one can hope(and vote if your a party member)

spook, was worried that a unchecked population was not good for anything,I was stating it would look after it self in time.
We are trying to make the animals fit into our world which is unnatural for them.
As for killing bears kill them all.

Yes, they will die of starvation. I don't know about you, but I'll take a quick death from a bullet over a slow death from starvation any day of the week.

Like the letter above offering no evidence to support overpopulation...???

Increased human contact can be attributed to increases in development, tourism, habitat destruction, abnormal weather, and all manner of variables.

yyyy don't get the post.

Come back and tell us the same thing when your dog/cat, son/daughter, wife/husband just became the main course at an all they can eat buffet. Yes populations take care of themselves naturally, and have done so before us and will do so again after us. But while we are here, we are the dominant predator with the ability to control certain things. Why would we put ourselves and our lively hoods at risk when we could use the renewable resources available to us and enjoy the bounty? Hunting is NATURAL! We have sharp teeth for a reason, only one stomach, and apposable thumbs so that we might kill some of our food.

Okay that was my rant for the day, I feel better now!
