I was wondering whether the AR-180b was like the ar15 in that anybody can make a copy of it or is it protected by a million patents? Thanks.

Why? The Ar180 was a poor design in the first place ... but utilized stamped sheet metal rather than forgings like the AR15 ...
Im sure Armalite still owns the pattern on the newer "B" model as they did modify it to use AR standard mags etc. ... but that is a good question.

i wonder if dlask would ever consider making a Canadina version of the AR 180b then?

OH NO, say it ain't so, you mean to tell me the ar-180b isn't an ar-15, or that it isn't as good!! Well I'm pretty sure that wasn't his Question. why is it everytime someone asks anything about the 180b some ar-15 guy(not all of you ar-15 guys) has to pop off about the superiority of the thing, "WE ALL KNOW IT". Its a way superior rifle in every way shape and forum.
**But you just go on and keep telling us that
while we are enjoying our 180s everywhere
you can't!**

PS, I would have an ar-15 over the 180b if I could use it somewhere besides the range.

I would very much doubt if there is any current patent on the AR-18/180/180B.
Scratch building any firearm is a major undertaking, as is reverse engineering an existing design for production.
Given the cost involved in putting something into production, the questions must be asked - How many could be sold, and at what price? Where would the market be?

Lol yes i wold rather a ar-15 too is not restricted but they are and i want a black gun that is not tied to a range so working a 47 hour work week this summer in the hope of getting an AR-180.

To answer the thread:
All you need to do is a patent search on the AR180B. If there are none, you're set. If you believe there is a market for a non-restricted AR-type you'll probably make a lot of money. Do I think there is a market for them? I don't know. We seem to be awash in AR's here in Canada. (too bad we can't send them south we'd all be rich) The market has pretty much decided even though they can't be used outside of the range, everyone wants an AR-15 style rig and the 180B doesn't cut it in that regard.

However I will say I am happy with my two "almost true hearted AR's" I am happy that they don't have to hide in the safe or show only at the range. I have a black rifle I can put a 10 round mag in to shoot. I can also hunt with it. Who cares if it has a stamped receiver, has a handful of upgrades, and is propriatary in design and cannot have the upper or lower changed out. It goes wherever a non-restricted rifle can go without fear of being bootphucked, tasered, or batoned by a LEO or Wildlife Conservation. Try that with your AR15 and get back to me on how it went.

I don't really think there would be a very big call for them either. For one thing the price would more than likely outragous due to the rather limited market in Canada. Even if every single ar-15 owner decided to they too wanted the freedoms the 180b owner enjoys and bought one, there wouldn't be enough sales to bring the price down into a reasonable range. (bigger market=lower price.)
It's not likely you could market them in the US either to increase the number of sales.

I just got of the phone with a major component supplier for the AR trade in the US. He says that the market for all the nice stuff, is now slowing. There will be a surplus soon in the US for Mags, Accessories and even complete assemblies!
