Since you are handloading, get the 7 mauser. In that #1 you should be able to push it a bit hotter than you think, and put it nipping at the heels of the 280. If you need 280 performance, get one, just not a remington.

Well, I have a Ruger and a Baikal in those calibers, enjoy both, but think you'll have more use for and shoot more with the 7X57. It even has "pride of ownership". You can reload it, so it'll be easy to feed that "baby", and is capable of taking most game you'll be dealing with. Go for it and enjoy!!!

Interesting......those who like the Ruger will speak up and yet the votes are even with the Rem.
Any of the Remington faithful going to argue the cause and tell me why this rifle is a good 'un?
I'd like to hear from people who actually own or have owned this model.

In the last few years I have owned two Ruger No 1 a while back a No 1b Standard in 300 weatherby, ammo wasn't readily available here in Newfoundland and after that a No 1 in 30-06 that i traded for a new browning blr in 30-06. love the browning for follow up shots but miss the class of the ruger.

I have a Ruger #1 International in 7x57, unfired, but have had other #1's. The only experience I have with Baikal is their o/u shotguns and their single shot rifles, both work excellent.

Well lads, I'm caught no longer.
I've finally made my decision and it's sprung from a number of factors.
Firstly, after my successful testing session at the range on Saturday I decided I didn't really need another rifle in the 7mm/308/8mm range as the 8mm Mauser project rifle I've just finished is shooting really well.
Even if it goes down I have another perfectly good medium to big game rifle in my T3 9.3x62.
That means going for a big bore.
My next consideration was whether I was happy to plump for a double of sound workmanship but limited performance and lower grade quality or for a single shot that was top grade but cost more to feed.
In the end I've decided not to buy the Baikal 45-70 and for a few reasons.
Paul said he would be reluctant to spend that much on what is effectively a very cheap double and I was already wondering about that.
The Baikal also has significant pressure limits and won't even handle lever action loads which means although you can use all the cool pointy 45 cal pills the rifle won't push them fast enough to get them to expand.
You end up with a double that isn't really powerful enough to shoot dangerous game and yet the smaller pills it can shoot to a decent velocity have shocking ballistic coefficients.
In a word a bad compromise for the sort of game I chase.
So that left me with the rifle that actually didn't make it into the poll.........the Ruger No1H in 450/400 NE.
Up until a phone call yesterday it looked like an expensive proposition to shoot on a regular basis.
But through a bit of research I found out that Ruger and Hornady's current bore size for the '400 is .410" cal.
That opens things up considerably.
Most US bullet companies make a 210gr jacketed pill for the 41 Rem Mag, 41 AE and other pistol cartridges and there are many lead pills also in this cal.
There are even some Aussie bullet makers looking at making pills for .41" cal.
I reckon with the right load they could turn into a REALLY fun plinking and small to medium game load.
And if I feel like it I can even get into casting my own 41 cal gas checked pills for a faster cheap pill.
There's no getting around the cost of the brass but, like the Lapua stuff I bought for my 9.3mm, it will be good quality and with reduced loads will last until the far side of forever.
Moreover it will be an attractive and distinctive rifle that will hold it's value for many years.
So, having made up my mind I ordered my Ruger this afternoon and put a deposit on it.
The store reckons it won't come in for a few months because the distributors are lazy but I can wait.
It will be mine..........

I picked the Rem 700 LSS 280 Rem Mountain rifle because I have an older blued amazingly accurate Rem 700 Mountain rifle in 280 Rem actually I just parked it because I bought a brand new Rem 700 LSS 50th Anniversary in 280 Rem in January 09.

Shot my last mountain goat with the old 280.

My older blued M/R is now a safe queen don't know what to do with it, it is to accurate to sell I mean I know I will regret it if I do but I would put the money from it into another rifle or scope.

I would never own another Ruger #1 just don't like how clunky they are yeah their strong actions but man are they fugly I went with the far lighter T/C Contender carbines and if I were to start again I'd go with the Encore/Pro Hunter before I'd ever touch a #1.

I also don't care about the 7X57 round does nothing for me the 280 Rem performance is just so much better or I could just down load to that level of performance which really doesn't interest me.

I have a Baikal sxs 12 gauge and it is a tight I would have no issues with using trapdoor loads in the sxs 45-70 would be a great backup bush gun that I would use before I ever grabbed a shotgun.

Remy 700 is a good choice, but from your perspective you have no interest in practicality, Then in that case go for cool, get the Ruger #1 in 375 H&H.

Pick none of these.... something else instead. Which is a vasectomy. haha
Good luck with the new addition!
I have 3 a 3, 4, and 5yr old and everyday is harder than the previous...lol

If that's all it took to get new guns I say line the women up doggy style so I can rest a Gun catalog on their backs while I get to work, Bah ha ha. :D

Besides which the real work begins when they hit teenage years, by then you will have enough guns to take them all hunting...teach them to skin and pack Deer for you. :p :D
