Which is the Quietest Air Rifle?

I have very limited experience with modern air rifles and now have a use for one in a rodent elimination operation that requires a very quiet rifle. I can't find much about which type of rifle (or brand) is the quietest. Is it fair to say, that as velocity goes up, noise increases with all types? How does the quitest compare to something like a 22 Long CB?

Thanks in advance.

id just use the CB's, anything with sufficent velocity for humane pest control is gonna let go with a nice THHWAPPPP.

if your really concerned with noise upsetting the neighbors, use traps and place a box that has an access hole over them. no one hears, and no sensitve persons will have go into shock when they see the dead critters.

The thing with CB's is the volume depends COMPLETELY on the gun.

A cb out of my 16" barreled rifle is still loud as hell....but fire the same CB's through my 26" barreled bolt action and you can hear the hammer drop.....quieter than any airgun.

Your best bet is to find a loooong barreled single shot .22 (old cooey/marlin/etc) for 100 bucks and use it as your dedicated CB gun :)

And even quieter out of a BSA Martini with a 29" barrel. :D

Magnum air rifles are also noisy because pellets break the sound barrier (1000 fps)

Outdoors a Cooey 75 with a 22 short is extremely quiet out in the open. I think I only heard the hammer drop and the tin can get a hole punched in it. Its too bad they don't allow silencers on air rifles. Seems silly where they are under 495fps and not classified as firearms.

Their all the same pretty much, under 500 fps, with a long barrel and weight/brake to direct the sound away from the shooter. I think a spring gun will be more quiet than a co2 rifle, but not certain. in any case their pretty quiet.

The Weihrauch HW50s packs enough of a punch to take grackles humanely at 50 yrds.
It shoots 850fps and is quiter than higher power models. about the same as the CB long.

Mind you because of the excess weight of airguns with a decent scope im now shooting CB out of my anschutz and 12 power scope weighing in at 6 lbs total.

Just wondering what the preformance difference is with CB long vs short.

^^^ The velocity is the same....but the ft/lbs of energy make the CB's a FAR superior killer. 14 grains of pellet vs 34-37 grains of bullet at 850 fps makes a HUGE difference. And remingtons new CeeBee's are hollow points, making them that much better :)

As far as the CB shorts vs longs, absolutely no difference. Same bullet, same charge, but you can fit a whole bunch of the shorts in a tube mag :D

I shoot the Remington CB's out of a bolt action .22 with a 21" barrel and they are
as quiet as a CO2 air pistol.

The Remi's are rated at 740fps but will almost go through a 3" yellow pages.
I don't think an air pistol could do that.

The quietest airguns are the ones with factory silencers we can't own in Canada. For the UK's love of gun control they can be purchased through the mail over there ? Makes no sense like most Govt's..........................Harold

A lot of the noise generated by airguns is the spring twang.Since it is so close to your ear when you fire it, sounds a lot louder than it really is.If you can get your springer safely apart, use some tar style airgun grease[Maccari sells it]The heavy sound deadening grease, makes the twang into more of a thump. Also keep your rounds subsonic by using heavy pellets.Lowers the velocity and lowers the speed of your piston.Heavy pellets can make it a lot quieter.

Just another vote for what has been repeated here already: CB's out of a long barrel .22 is the way to go. I had a bunch of air rifles including a Diana 350 Magnum before I discovered CBs out of my 24" Marlin 39A was quieter, faster loading, and way more powerful.

I actually thought this made a lot of sense when I first learned of this UK law. Here the gov't just blanket treats all silencers like they are only for illicit activities. In the UK, although they suck with their firearms laws overall, at least they recognized that after regulating airguns down to 12ftlbs or so there is realistically no harm in allowing people to use silencers, it just makes the sport less irritating to neighbours. If our government gave a rat's a## to even look into the matter, I'm sure they would come to the same conclusion. Problem is they can't be bothered. They just use a "shotgun" approach (pun semi-intended) to addressing what they perceive to be an area of concern and take out the innocent bystanders (the air-gunners) in the process.

take a look at the sheridan/benjamin pump up guns, im pretty sure the new ones run like the old, only off air pressure. that means no twang from a spring, no crack from co2. they are fairy cheap to buy to. id also say they are alot more accurate then a cb, i can shoot under 1 inch at 50 yards with my old one. use a de bouncer and they get even quieter. pcp guns are also very quiet to but expensive. ive also tried a nitrogen purged piston in my hatson mod.55, its not much more quiet but at least no twangy sound. p.s. the very quietest airgun i know of, also the airgun that ive killed the most grouse with, is the webley tempest. 44 birds and counting!
