so i was curious on what your guys input was on side by side..?
eg: barrel length, price, company, style... any opinions that you can offer ill greatly appreciate it

Yes try and get one that has a pump on it,JK the lenght and all need to be for
what you want to shoot with it!

SXS are great if used by someone that can actually hit what they point at!

SXS's have been doing it long before OVU and pumps ever came about!

What do you want to use it for - this is kind of an inportant question to ask yourself, as a big 30" barrelled 12 would not be needed in a Partridge bush!
Many of us shoot SXS's ,and as soon as we know what kind of birds you want to get after, we can narrow it down for you!:)

TSE has some beautiful sxs's from Fabarm. Check them out, buy two, send me one for a spare. I promise it some extra special tlc and will send it back whenever you want it. promise.

i am planning on getting my core and hunter lisence eventually, so i want to be able to do some hunting with it in the near future.. but i dont have the $$$ to spend on it...? but for the moment im just doing targets with my remington 870, and since im planning geting those licenses stated above, i would think getting it chambered for 3 1/2" shells... or would this be overkill for a first time on a side by side, and thanks for all the opinions..

In my opinion Fabarm does some of the most practical SxS guns around. The 12ga guns are chambered for 3" shells, the HP choke tubes that the newest guns come with allow you to use steel shot and the full choke! The entry level guns are not cheap, but they do offer value for $, the high end guns offer fancy wood and engraving and are priced well below what the big name brand guns of the same style sell for, and with the added advantages discussed above.

yeah i dont need the wood engravings or anything like that, and 3.5" is maybe not needed and just go with 3" shells.. there was one for sale at a gun store in dawson creek and it was a 2nd hand side by side for $1000 cad but it had the old style pull back the hammer on each barrel and dual triggers and this shotgun had a 28" barrel... i guess i have lots of decision making...?

At this point in time, you actually need to do a lot of research before you take a decision :). An informed decision will enable you to spend your money wisely resulting in an appropriate firearm purchase.

As already mentioned in some of the earlier responses to your question....the following should drive your quest for the proper shotgun.

1. There would be a need to determine first what exactly are you planning on hunting i.e. game bird(s) and/or animal?

2. The type of budget that you have at disposal to secure that purchase?

In the event you are unable to find the shotgun of your choice by the start of 2009 season - venture out to the fields with that 870 (once you've obtained your hunting license).

Do not rush your decision, take some time to explore and look at various sxs (used and new) and weigh your options. Ask plenty of questions :)

I think first and for-most, find out a little about the gun you're wanting to buy.
It doesn't sound like your too up on the SxS. To use a double barrel with hammers as an example of what you looked at makes me wonder if you know anything about doubles. Are you wanting someone to suggest a Stoger or a coachman or what ever they call those guns with a short barrel? No one here can help you unless you have some knowledge on the guns they are talking about.

I hope everyone shuns those awful hammerguns, especially those current ones made by AYA and run 15K and up, maybe then i could have my pick of them, double hammerguns are my absolute favs.....The new shotgun buyer should look at some of the hammerless doubles on the used market or maybe the cz line although i have reservations about Turkish guns with alloy receivers and wonder how they will hold up.

well thanks for all the info and help... and to do some serious research into this SxS before i do any $$$ spending.. again i appreciate it... and when i do have a few choices in mind ill let any and all people about them... til then have a good one and safe shooting...

The Shotgun thread here has some good info, but it's buried amid tons of black tacticool mall ninja shotty threads. Another great resource is shotgunworld.com (there is a Side by Side only section in the For Sale section). But to get you started, here's a list of some names to look for to learn about side by side guns.

Ithaca (SKB) models 100, 200, 280
Ugartechea, and AYA (and many other fine Spanish makes)
Browning BSS (and the BSL)
Winchester 21, 23 and 24 (is that right?)
Beretta makes some nice ones as well, but $$$$.
Savage/Stevens model 311 or something?
Baikal
CZ Ringneck and Bobwhite
Stoeger uplander
Merkel (also $$$$)

Enjoy the learning experience!

If you are just getting into bird hunting (upland or migratory), I would slow down on the SxS shotgun idea...There are a lot of opinions on SXS's, but you will find most people who own one are fairly experienced upland hunters. Many say SxS's are a superior upland gun for fast flying birds, but they tend to be expensive (for a good one), and you may find an over / under far more advantageous when you are learning. You can shoot clays and birds with an o/u, and they are normally a better bang for the buck. Pick a 28 inch barrel if you think you will be hunting both migr & upland, a 26 if your just hunting upland. If you find you like upland hunting (and you likely will), buy a SxS prior to getting too old to walk. Otherwise, an o/u or even your 870 will do just fine. Still want a SxS? Try CZ for a low to mid price range, and Ruger for a mid price range. Cheers.
