Which slug is more deadly???

"...You wont notice the difference..." And neither will Yogi, Bambi or Bullwinkle. Unless you don't hit 'em in the right spot.

with both of those slugs in that gun there won't be a difference...i agree with most of the guys on here that say that if you can't kill or turn away said bear with a 23/4 slug...it is SUPERBEAR and unkillable anyway so you would be screwed regardless...

I really don't think it matters. For use on a bear I'd feel just fine with a 2 3/4" pushing a 1oz slug at 1200 fps. It's not like he's going to get up after punching one or two of them into the chest. Of course the Brenekes would still be my first choice when they are available. As long as you have 3 of those in the pipe you should be all set. I can't really imagine an emergency involving a bear where I'd have the time or the need for more than 3 shots from a 12ga.

1) 8 158 Joules of energy
2) 8 428 Joules of energy

You wont notice the difference ;)

NOW that is one man who knows physics! KE=1/2MV2 (kinetic energy - measured in joules) = 1/2 of the mass times velocity square. Use it for all speeding bullets and you'll be surprised what you get! See...pay attention in physics class fer sumtin!

I think the 3" slugs only ensure you have a round less in your magazine. I just had an Ithaca M-37 pump gun built into a bear gun for my son in BC. It has a 23/4" chamber, and it seems as though the 23/4" pumps are pretty cheap these days, but if I didn't think the standard length shells would do the job, I'd have got him a 590 or given him mine.

Physics, the only thing taught in our school system thats not total bulls**t.

3" slugs are not required. If you felt 'unsafe' with 2.75" instead of 3" slugs, you worry too much.

2 3/4" will kill anything at 'defensive' ranges. 3" won't make it any deader, but will increase recoil and make a second shot slightly tougher.

Trap loads are the cheapest. Carry the equivalent cost of 5 rounds of brenekkes, in trap loads at all times, if you can get the shots off, the box and a half of trap loads will stop anything :onCrack:

grrr. always forget the 1/2 in front of it... always... even back in high school

even with 1/2 in there, difference is going to be even less, and 3" will still be "deadlier"

I recently had a bear experience, and I'd like to share.

I got my browning BPS 10G back from "Tactical Paradise" a month ago. I know I spent 2X the price of the original gun on mods, but it was well worth it. Chopped to 18", Teflon coated and decked out with tac, I was good to go.

SO, I headed out on a back country trip, ever vigilant for bear, the bane of my existence.

Day 3: I heard something the other day. It might have been me kicking in my sleep, but to play it safe I haven't slept in 36 hrs.

Day 4: Pretty sure I saw a bear this AM while I was cooking my MRE. I better attach the light/laser to the BPS.

Day:5 A raccoon stole my MRE's this AM. Pretty sure it was laughing at me. Is that possible?

Day 6: This was it. Zero hour. My camp was invaded by a rabid black bear at 0500hrs today. I grabbed the BPS, loaded, and waited.

Day 6, entry 2: It happened. I saw the bear. It looked right at me. I was food.

It came within 75M, I knew it was him or me. I shouldered the gun, aimed, and fired.

After about 3 hours, I regained consciousness. No sign of the bear. My nose stopped bleeding after about an hour, I did recover one of my front teeth. The wife is yelling about the beer cans on the lawn, SO, I'll call this hunt quits.

Tritium. I'll need more tritium for the next hunt. Or should I say "operation."

I do wildlife damage assessments on forage crops in southern BC and walk a lot of remote hay fields in bear and cat country. I carry a M870 with 20" rifle sighted bbl with plug removed and mag loaded with a rd of 00 buck followed by 11/4 oz slugs.

I used to do crop hail claims in MB and most summers would work around the Duck Mtns and Riding Mtn Park where bears are pretty thick and love ripe grain, especially oats. Back then I carried a M500 with extended mag and speedfeed stock (wish I had'nt sold it) with a mix of slugs and 00 buck. A couple of summers I did hail claims for a fellow who lived just north of Riding Mtn Park and had a huge bear problem in his fields.Bears were so numerous that he had a blank cheque from provincial wildlife to do what he felt was necessary. One year he had shot 32 bears by early August with his .30-06 and figured he might make it 50 before harvest. I called him "Grizzly Adams" and used to tease him about getting his swather around all those bear carcasses in his fields.

i see no need to spend $5 a slug just to waste it on a cute and fuzzy black bear when a plain old winchester 2.75" $1 slug will go in like a nickle and out like a softball... now if you are more concerned about grizz or polar bear then toss that shotgun in the bushes and get a rifle.

I am starting to think people who question the stopping power of over an ounce of lead at close range have never shot a living animal with over an ounce of lead at close range...

Brenneke 2 3/4 is what I have. 3 inch do not cycle well for me and they are to boomy for a solid follow-up shot. And they hurt! I shoot alotta shotgun too!

or the 2000fps , 300grain nuke slugs I just bought!
