Fabsports is waiting on 8.5 inchers. Check his site. They are a threaded barrel. I don't know if your rifles OAL will be legal with an 8 inch pipe, but they are legal to buy and sell.

16" is considered optimal for velocity with most 22LR, accuracy may be another story, it really depends on alot more than the barrel, but i wouldn't go too short if you still want accuracy...

in theory the shorter the barrel, the more accurate it *should* be, on the premis that a shorter barrel is stiffer and by nature has less harmonics. that was the opinion expressed by tony kidd of kid innovative design.

that being said, i was gonna play around with a 12-14" kid .920 barrell, but they became very unavailable in canada. so i went a different direction.

if i could souce one for a decet price, i would still buy a barrel, and then buy another 10/22 to put it on to test the accuracy.

a short barrel is stiffer therefore should be miore accurate. you also tend to get more accuracy if the bullet travels at subsonic velocities so a shorter barrel will help there too ( I have a 10-22 with an 11.5 inch barrel that gets amazing results with subsonic ammo, but so-so with high velocity stuff). But there are tons of other variables that affect accuracy.

JohnC,

Would you mind posting a picture of your rig? I'm debating barrel length and would like to see what a 11.5" looks like on a 10/22. Thanks.

Hey Guys,

I am looking to build a 10/22 using parts from FabSports and I just wanted to double check that if I were to build it the overall length of the gun when colapsed needs to be over 660mm to stay nonrestricted correct? Does a muzzle break count towards the overall length of the rifle?
Looking at the FS556 stock, with a 8.5" Barrel and a 5" fake can and a stock of some kind.

Good to know.

Hey Guys I am now looking to cut the front sight of my barrel to permanently affix a muzzle brake Aprox. 2.5 inches long, now my barrel as it stands is 18.5.
So how short can I cut the barrel down without it being "Illegal"...

another thing has anyone ever cut there barrel before. How does it shoot after?? Is it some what accurate? I don't really shoot anything past 75 yards so will cutting it really affect accuracy?

I plan on using my friends help at a metal shop so it won't be a hack job (I hope).

Thanks very much..

AFAIK...... If you "cut down" the barrel it will be illegal!

Even my local g-smith will not do it for me. (I know I asked, he has the equipment and the skill)

According to the CFC regs, (I have been informed) you can only replace, not alter, the barrel of your 10/22. There must be a FRT # assigned to the barrel. If you buy an after market barrel that is sold in Canada, it will have a FRT# already.

Don't cut down your barrel, just go and buy a barrel for your application.

FYI as long as your 10/22 is over 26 1/4" OAL it will be legal. I have seen pics of a 10/22 (on this site) with a factory stock (with the fore end cut back to accomodate) with a 8 1/2" barrel. It is also nice that the 8 1/2" barrel (check Fabsports) also comes with a threaded end...... For the installation of a "imitation" silencer of flash hider.

This is all info I have heard, or seen..... If I am wrong about cutting down a barrel PLEASE correct me if I am wrong,

Good luck with your build!

Cheers!

From what I understood from the Smith& wesson 460 debate is that the barrel length is measured to the end of the rifling not to any device attached either temporary or permanent i.e. muzzle brake, flash hider, fake can, etc... In any case, do not cut your barrel less then 18.5" or make your OAL less then 26 1/4"

As for accuracy I have observed .22 RF are best when kept sub sonic, this is achieved in my anschutz by having long barrels causing more drag/friction slowing the target loads to sub-sonic velocities (yes I know most target loads are sub-sonic however at very cold temperatures some may exhibit trans-sonic velocities.

I have a Krinker with an 8.5" barrel OAL is over 26". Folding stock is fixed and cannot be folded. Comes in non-restricted. Has a Krinkov flash hider. Can hit a 10" gong 10/10 times at 100 yards with Federal brick-o-ammo with a cheap 1X30 Tasco point dot sight or iron sights in the sitting position no problem.

I've had 2 ER shaw 11.5" barrels and they are VERY accurate. I still have the stainless version. Great carrying rifle.
