You'd think it'd be easy to spend money...

I have the Remington 700 CDL... got it like 'twice-fired' for the wonderful price of $680 shipped of the EE. Couldn't be happier, it is my favourite gun in my 8-gun collection. The only thing I don't like about it is when my friend decided it would be a good idea to sight it in, in a machine vice with cardboard as a cushion =( There are about 7 small dents on each side of the firearm.. Still a beautiful gun, and it shoots wonderfully as well.

There's a really nice Model 70 in 30-06 for sale in the EE... and my sigline LOL

Yes, I love that fabulous-looking rig. I've been coveting it since I first saw it but I've just had one of my three possible purchases fall though because my stoopid Québec credit union doesn't do any kind of electronic money transfer unless it's to another Desjardins account holder. I had said to the other gentleman that I could send a Canada Post money order and wait until he had it in hand before he shipped, but apparently EMT is the only safe way to do this these days...

I normally just send a Bank MO, takes a few days via the mail. It's as good as cash in the sellers hand once it arrives.

I prefer EMT, but would not turn down a money order and lose a sale...That's pretty dumb...

I don't get it either, but in the past two years, I've lost out on three buys (including this one) over it, so now I just default to 'it won't work' when looking through the classifieds on these sites.

Wrong time of year for .308's etc. Closer to deer season, yeah, but not now. You could go to a gun show though. A grand will buy a really nice rifle with a scope and some ammo if you buy used.
That .270 will do nicely though. Give you a dandy varmint rifle too. Varmint hunting is fabulous practice for deer/moose season.
So will a 300 WSM, but .270 ammo is everywhere. .300 WSM might not be readily available in small places. That only matters if you get to the Gaspe and find you left you ammo on the kitchen table.

But if I get a good deer gun that's also a nice varmint zapper, I won't have an excuse to get both...

What the he77?

So, I'm just checking in from Vacation, and I see that Silverado's m70 in 30-06 is *still* for sale?

Now I'm just feeling taunted. I guess the economy's even worse than we'd thought...

Hey guys,

So after everything, I bought a rifle. After Sunray's post, I opened the field a bit and spoke to some people, went to the nearest gunshow, etc. And ended up with an M70 in .270 Win, just because the timing was right and the new M70 is a gun I'd decided I wanted after I read about FN re-booting the production. It's a 2008 that I bought off a fellow nut in the EE. I'll let you know once it arrives. Had to juggle the finances a bit to buy it, due to recent 'events,' but if it's all I think it's going to be, it'll have been worth it.

As to the .270, I came to the realisation that everything I know about hunting is, a this point, theoretical... except one thing: trigger flinch. I think that for my first gun (and, if I play my cards right, my wife's first shooting experience), the .270 Win won't kick hard enough to develop the flinch.

Herself knows that I might still be looking for a 30-06 sometime in the next couple of years, though

Thanks for all your help, guys.

If you hang around here, I bet you will have the 30-06 before you know it :D

Montreal sucks for purchasing firearms. The last three firearms I have purchased have all come from out West, and even with the shipping I got a better deal than if I was even able to find the rifle here.

As for purchasing a rifle out of province, and wanting to hold the rifle to check for a good fit, if I cannot find the same rifle locally, I usually drive one hour to Gander Mountain in Plattsburgh N.Y. They usually have a big selection on the wall, and you do not need to ask a clerk to get the rifle, you just help yourself.

Congrats, enjoy your new rig. One word of advice, based on a few decades of 1st hand experience. Do not buy a cheap scope. Buy the best quality that you can afford. A cheap scope will very likely let you down at some point- maybe several times- and you don't want that to happen during your hunt. All of my scopes are Bausch and Lombs and Leupolds. Never a single problem with them. About 20 yrs ago the reticle in my Bushnell Banner came loose and turned sideways while I was shooting at the range. The Bushnell was mounted on my 10-22! Never abused and not a recoil issue- just a cheap piece of junk! There are some decent deals on used scopes in the EE here.

Happy and safe hunting!!!

As for the scope, I'd been planning on getting a Leupold VXI, but in the end, the rifle's coming with a Nikon Prostaff. I figure I'll keep it on for now and see about upgrading the scope next year.

Funny thing about all this: I'd finally got the money (back) together for Silverado's beautiful M70 in 30-06 -- and found a way to send an EMT -- but when I got back to town and logged on to tell him I would take the gun, someone else had *just* bought it. I was kinda heartsick about it because I'd been thinking on it wy whole vacation and moving money around and getting my sister to agree to send the funds for me.

I guess it turned out for the best.

A wise investment, Roadkill.
You won't lose any value on the M70 and 270 Win is common as muck and very capable.
Have at it and show us some pics when you sight it in. :)

I beg to argue. A 20mm you could shoot it in the anywhere and it would go down. i just dont know how much of the animal would be left
