Well, I had built this up with lots of abused and non-matching parts as a project gun to refinish, and now is is done! The parts were all covered in 60 years worth of packing grease that had dulled the finish and stained the wood black in places. Now that it is done, all the stamps and inspectors marks are still clearly visible, and it looks like it just came out of the factory.


I am really happy with the way it came out.

I think it looks very nice ,has a nice cherry/mohogany look.Of course, some here might call you a heretic and burn you at the stake.Ah....screw `em !

Yeah. The stain I selected was a touch lighter and had the nice red tint that you see on all mint examples, but whatever the wood was, is soaked up alot more of the stain then I expected. As for the shellac, I was not sure about that. I had asked around a few guys that owned them at the range, and nobody seemed to know what the exact finish was, so I compromised and went with varithane. Good hard finish that should resist nicks and scratches.

The black on the rifle is duracoated, so it should last a long time to come.

Overall, for a cheaply built refurbished gun, I think that this is a keeper.
 
I like it, nice work! Although the stain doesn't look exactly like the others i've seen it still looks impressive. Any other plans for her as of yet?

Also, what did you use to spray the duracoat?

It's good that you tossed the real sling swivel away. You should really put a laser and scope on it though.

The only change I would make is to polish up the bolt carrier, instead of black. Otherwise, that looks sweet, although the purist in me wants to cringe. I quite like it.

The missing sling swivel is in my shop, as is the buttplate. Neither were completely dry at the time I put the rifle back together, so they are still awaiting reinstallation. Same wood, same metal.

No plans to put a laser and scope on it.. why would there be? This is not some tacticool bubba job that a few dorks have attempted, this was a restoration attempt, and it seems to have gone pretty darn well according to the rest of the guys here. Leave your insults to sombody who deserves them... like this guy, who seems to be who you were thinking of:

Anyways, to the guys who said to polish or make the bolt carrier white, can you post up a few pics so I can see what it should be? It is never too late to rework it.
