Few days ago I had seen a beautiful older CZ/Brno commercial Mauser system rifle in 7x57, with butter-knife bolt handle and receiver with integral dovetail scope bases (square bridges?! I like them very much, one piece steel, no screws). How common those rifles are, what are the most common calibres? Also, how long is magazine well, can it take longer rounds like 30-06 or 7x64. I would love to have one in 7x64, but I wouldn’t mind other calibres. If you know where I can get one, please send me PM. If you have a nice pictures, especially receiver area, I would like to have them. Thanks, Onty.

To me, you are referring to the models 21/22 (most are model 21H, though).
They are not rare but a bit scarce. Usually in Canada they were sold either in 7X57 and 8X57, but other (european) calibers do exist but are rarely seen in N-A.
I don't recommend swaping barrels / chamging caliber on them, because you will lose all the collectable value (unless you don't care losing money).
Trade Ex got some, but I think they sold them all.
There was quite a few customized ZG47 actions that you still can find, too.

Agree with Baribel. I've had two 7X57's in the past. See for sale occassionally at shows and online from low of $650 to about $950-ish for a very clean example. 7X57's are more desirable to me personally. Someone had one on the EE recently.

I agree but feel that the value for very clean 7x57 are now about $1100 or so.

A 7x64 21H is relatively rare.

great rifles - all of the BRNO's

Not much would separate me from mine either. I would surely like to have one with the Suehler German claw mount though. They were made only for a short time before the square bridge.
6,5x57, 7x57, 7x64, 8x57 and even rumors of a couple 9,3x57s have floated around. Not sure I'd want to touch that one off though, the slender stock is hard to hold on to.

Well I just picked up a brno 7x57 although someone cut and changed the bolt handle YUCK! I have 2 questions if someone could help.

What kind of mounts fit on the machined scope rails?

How or can the bottom mag. plate drop out?
Thanks

The 21H , ZG47, CZ550 as with all other "large" BRNO CZ uses 19 mm dovetal mounts. They are made by BRNO/CZ, Leupold, Warne, and a few others. I prefer the BRNO CZ. They did make them (and still do if you can find them) with separate rings or with rings attached by a cross bridge. The cross bridge ones are very very strong for the big bores.
All rings made for the BRNO/CZ has a recoil lug built into one ring to fit the slot in the rear left side of the dovetail to prevent recoil movement.

Lots of times you find these wonderful rifles defaced by people drilling and mounting a base sot hey can fit a Weaver ring or whatever -- I know it is no big deal - but the dovetails are such a simple elegant solution that I can never understand why the proper rings are just not put onthem.

Even the certain Parker Hale mounts will fit as PH used BRNO actions for a while in their rifles.

The mag plate will drop out by pushing in the stud and pushing backwards on the plate. They may very tight and you may need to use a brass drift to tap it back while holding down the stud.

Lynx makes rings for them too (on my rifle above) but I don't like them much, they have a weak crossbolt design with pressure being applied to one side of the crossbolt only.

Have a Meopta in a CZ mount like farshot mentioned which I'd like to fit some 26mm rings in for a better platform.

Mine ('49) is fitted with Warne rings and the orignal Weaver K series adjustable scope the original owner put on it when new. Nice rig, but it can be a kicker from the bench (especially in 8X757).
Noel, I've got "rumors" of some 9X57, but nothing yet on my side about the 9.3X57...

There is also 8x60 which may be found and is used quite extensively up to the largest game in Africa quite often.

I myself have never seen either a 9 or 9.3 x 57. But tomorrow is another day....

There was said to be at least two 9,3s in BC somwhere, both in the same safe but I cannot recall where I got the info.Take it with a few grains of salt.

Farshot, I knew I missed at least one chambering (8x60).... thanks for adding that.

Surely someone out there has the pre square bridge 21 or ZG they could show off........c'mon!

Noel - I actually have a round receiver 21 H in 8x60S with the claw mounts - I just have to find time to get it the picture up here.

Noel, thank you for those wonderful pictures. What is calibre?

Dan, would you please put some pictures of your 7x64? Yep, I am very jealous…

BTW, if ever run into any of those rifles with barrel gone or just a receiver, please let me know. Thanks to all again.
