what is the most quiet bullet for .22 rifle ?

Hi I would like to let my son shoot .22 rifle during hunting season but don't want too lound and scary him ( 8 year old ),I head said that CB is the most quite one just like air rifle sound,is it correct ?or any suggestion would be appreciated,thanks !!!

A .22 CB fired from a long barrel rifle is very quiet. My 24" Marlin 81 is so quiet, you don't need hearing protection when firing CB longs. TBS, make sure to wear hearing protection so that you are a good example for your kids.

I had both out at the range and the Subsonic in fact plenty louder, the CB was so quiet I though I kept jamming and I kept looking to see if that was the case. Me and the guy shooting beside me got a good chuckle out of it.

CB is the way to go!!!
 
CB longs are real quiet but IMO only good to about 25 yards. At 50 yards through my scope I can actually see the bullet arcing toward the white paper target. Drop at 50 is 6 inches with a 25 yard zero.
 
Barrel length makes a pretty huge difference as well. Enough that CBs from an 18" barrel are pretty much the same as Subsonics from a 29" barrel, in my experience.
I believe that a few companies (remington at the least) make CB LR rounds, they would probably be a safe bet.
 
CB's are ok if you can see the bullet hits, but otherwise I always have that little doubt that the bullet never left the barrel. In most rifles I've tried, they are not very accurate and sometimes a pain to fumble into the chamber.

Satcom was right re: cycling issues (I think only the Remington 550 and some .22-short semi-auto pistols will cycle wil CB's); another issue could be that CB's will not chamber in all firearms - esp. those "non-bolt-action" that are .22 LR only...:yingyang:
 
I have two, a six and eight year old girl that love to shoot. they have a little henry single shot and the pink thumbhole by savage. They definately appreciate the quiet stuff.
CB shorts are available here in winnipeg area. never a problem for them to leave the barrel. And they have shot hundreds through each rifle. If you want the absolute quietest. TRY to find some aguila super colibri. They quietest I have ever come accross.
My kids shoot at a bout a six inch gong at about 25 yards.. Even I am impressed.
I know that I have seen aguila stuff at the brandon gun show. I guy from ontario is usually selling them.
The comment is a safety issue that the bullet may not travel the entire way out on a rifle I think that is why they are marketed as a handgun ammo.

P.s. You will find that soon you will be looking for muffs and CHEAPER source of ammo.
 
also possibly getting a squib in a long barrel gun.
especially a semi where some of the bullets energy will be used to attempt
to push back the bolt.
 
Tell them to suck it up and wear hearing protection and teach and tell them and make them learn that noise is a part of the sport and that they should not be scared.

When my daughter and the one in her belly now turn 5 or sooner they will be learning with a .22 or CO2 air rifle what ever they can comfortably hold. And there is no reason to waste money on expensive quiet rounds when a pair of muffs is cheaper.

AFAIK, that warning's only been placed on the quietest of the Aguila...:yingyang:
